"The Luxury of Less" WHITE SPACE IS THE ULTIMATE LUXURY
In design as in life, white space is the ultimate luxury. On the page, white space signifies that you have plenty of room to spare. It is an important element of design which enables the objects in it to exist at all, the balance between positive (or non-white) and the use of negative spaces is key to aesthetic composition. Judicious use of white space can give a page a classic, elegant, or rich appearance. It frames images with an aura of accessibility. The less crowded a publication layout, the more elitist is its attitude. Because of its upscale connotation, white space was vilified in the 1970s as too elitist. Only in the late 1980s did a handful of art directors, dare to reintroduce white space. White space is now, a fundamental building block of good design.
