Not Just, "Pretty"
Sometimes, designers are mistaken for being the people who "just make things look pretty". Although somewhat true, designers posses a multitude of skills and talents beyond the ability to "pretty things up". Design involves thinking about the point the client wishes to communicate to its audience. The final project may be pretty, but will also serve a purpose, communicate a clear message, sell an idea and reach the target audience. It is important that you, the client, communicate to the designer the idea you want to sell, the purpose of the designed piece, and the message to be made. Trust your designer's creative mind to carry out the rest.
