1) Meet... Barbara Haskins!
Barbara spent much of her childhood in NC on a military base, and went to high school in CT.
a) How did you get into the dancing world?
My cousin and his wife danced, and watching them inspired me.
b) Do you have a favorite song and why?
I probably have a song of the month. Sometimes that varies with hit tunes, like "Royals." I bought seven versions of it on iTunes. I like the Voice and often buy a song I like, and then another version of it too. Like "Try." I have the versions done by Pink, and from the Voice, Sasha Allen, TessAnn Chin, and Amber Carrington. When I warm up at competitions, I tend to listen to "Outta Your Mind" by Lil Jon, which I first heard on So You Think You Can Dance; it was the brilliant number with Twitch and the Miami ballet dancer Alex.
c) What do you think is the most important thing any dancer should know about dance?
First, it's about having fun. Moving one's body to music is intrinsically rewarding, in my opinion. Lesser things are: be pleasant and says thanks to your partner, support your own weight and move yourself (don't make the man move you, ladies). Clear leads are super helpful, gentleman; ask if yours could be more clear. :) Thinking can get in the way of dancing.
d) Do you have a favorite novel or movie?
The movie, The Way Way Back was heartfelt and entertaining.
e) What are you up to in your spare time when you're not dancing? In good weather I garden, and in all weather, I spoil my dogs. And I love to cook.
f) Can you tell us a little-known fact about you that few people might know? Once upon a time I was a registered nurse.

2) Do you know children ages 5-8 who might be interested in taking ballroom/latin dance in the Charlottesville area?
A number of people have approached USA Dance Charlottesville requesting a ballroom/latin dance class for young children. Are you a parent with potentially interested children, or is there someone you know who might be interested in participating in some way? Let's begin the conversation and share ideas. Please email with comments and/or thoughts!

4) Need to buy or sell new or barely used ballroom or latin attire?USA Dance Charlottesville has a spot on our website where you can advertise new ballroom or latin items that you would like to sell locally within our community, if you are also a dancer in our community. Visit our website if you are looking for something in particular. Contact us if you'd like to have an item posted!

5) Which song is it that makes YOU fall in love with ballroom, latin or swing dancing every time? Tell us: we want to play the song for you on our dance floor this year!
You know what I'm talking about... the song that makes your feet move, your heart soar, your body come alive! The one that makes you fall in love, utterly or almost, with your partner, for just that moment? Which is yours? Email us: we want to know 1) the name of the song, 2) the artist, and 3) the dance you like to dance to it! We want to add it to our playlist for you!

6) Get into the dance FREE!
If you are a USA Dance Member or a college student, volunteer at the front desk for half an hour and you get into the dance free! You'd be greeting friends as they arrive, helping them to sign in, giving your feet/knee/hip a break, and all the while watching fabulous dancing on the floor! Thank you for your support! Check in to see slot availability when you arrive or email to sign up in advance by the end of the Friday before the dance! (NOTE: this opportunity is available on a dance by dance basis as slots become available at the discretion of and subject to the approval of USA Dance Board members.)
