Mardi Gras Dance!
Dominick Montie & Barbara Haskins
have these and other answers for you at this special Ballroom Partner Connections class!
Lead-follow is a physical action achieved through technique, but it's also a form of interpersonal communication. Dominick will focus on channels of communication so that the physical lead-follow can produce better dancing. 1) Meet... Dominick Montie!
Dominick grew up in the smaller-than-Cville town of Brookeville, Maryland!
a) How did you get into the dancing world?
Several of my college buddies got married one Fall and I didn't know how to dance at their weddings. So, it was a New Year's resolution to take dancing lessons. I took my very first lesson from Cathleen Rhodes at Steve Shergold's former studio!
b) Do you have a favorite song and why?
Just about any ballroom song that Luca Baricchi (former ballroom world champion) has showcased to. His dancing has inspired me for years, and I feel inspired whenever I dance to songs he's used.
c) What do you think is the most important thing any dancer should know about dance?
Never forget that dancing should have emotional content. Proper technique is necessary to achieve a partner connection and successful lead-follow, but without emotion dancing becomes robotic and dull.
d) Do you have a favorite novel or movie?
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand and the movie Dead Poets Society. Neither are recent, but they're my faves.
e) What are you up to when you're not dancing? Rowing - one of my other passions. Rowing and dancing are quite similar and each has helped me develop the other, particularly regarding body awareness and control.
f) Can you tell us a little-known fact about you that few people might know? It's not in my nature to be mysterious, but I can't talk about it and I can't talk about why.

2) Need to buy or sell new or barely used ballroom or latin attire?USA Dance Charlottesville has a spot on our website where you can advertise new ballroom or latin items that you would like to sell locally within our community, if you are also a dancer in our community. Visit our website if you are looking for something in particular. Contact us if you'd like to have an item posted!

3) Which song is it that makes YOU fall in love with ballroom, latin or swing dancing every time? Tell us: we want to play the song for you on our dance floor this year!
You know what I'm talking about... the song that makes your feet move, your heart soar, your body come alive! The one that makes you fall in love, utterly or almost, with your partner, for just that moment? Which is yours? Email us: we want to know 1) the name of the song, 2) the artist, and 3) the dance you like to dance to it! We want to add it to our playlist for you!

4) Get into the dance FREE!
If you are a USA Dance Member or a college student, volunteer at the front desk for half an hour and you get into the dance free! You'd be greeting friends as they arrive, helping them to sign in, giving your feet/knee/hip a break, and all the while watching fabulous dancing on the floor! Thank you for your support! Check in to see slot availability when you arrive or email to sign up in advance by the end of the Friday before the dance! (NOTE: this opportunity is available on a dance by dance basis as slots become available at the discretion of and subject to the approval of USA Dance Board members.)
