1) Meet... Gary Chovan!
Gary Chovan grew up in Massillon, Ohio, a small town near Cleveland.  Gary has been a dance instructor for more than 30 years. While working for Arthur Murray dance studios, Gary taught in Ohio, Arizona and Virginia. Gary has studied under some of the finest professionals in the dance business including several U.S. and World champions. In 2000, Gary was named dance professional of the year by the Richmond USA Dance Chapter.  It seems that he also likes to live a bit on the edge (read on!)...

a) How did you get into the dancing world?
I responded to an Arthur Murray ad in the paper.  I got into teaching as I thought it would be nicer to get paid to learn to dance, rather than pay to learn dancing.

b) Do you have a favorite song and why?
I don't have a particular favorite song as I enjoy different types of music and a variety of music in each type.  I enjoy dancing to the old hits by Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Ed Ames, etc.

c) What do you think is the most important thing any dancer should know about dance?
I feel that the most important thing to remember about dancing is that it is fun.  As you become more advanced with your dancing, don't lose the fun and joy of dancing.

d) What do you like to do in your non-dancing spare time?
I enjoy watching sports and attending UVA football and basketball games in my spare time.

e) Can you tell me a little known fact or two that people might be surprised to know about you?
I'm an avid NASCAR fan and I've driven stock cars on the Charlotte Motor Speedway at speeds exceeding 140 mph.  In 2011,  I also competed in the SPCA's version of Dancing with the Stars with the former 2008 Miss Virginia, Tara Wheeler.  Although we didn't win the contest, I had a great time training the former Miss Virginia!

2) Special FREE UVA Showcase Event and Performance Opportunity!

This Sunday, November 17th, from 3:30-5 pm at Alumni Hall (on the UVA campus), the UVA Ballroom Club presents their Fall Showcase!  There is no fee to attend.  All local dancers are invited to attend; come and see the new performances on which these dynamic dancers have been working.  There will be some opportunities to social dance between performances.

Are you working on a routine of your own with your partner?  Would you like a chance to show it off to a supportive audience?  The UVA Ballroom welcomes your participation as well this Sunday!  To register, or for more information, please contact Colleen Buchanan before Saturday the 16th at noon.

4) Which song is it that makes YOU fall in love with ballroom, latin or swing dancing every time?
Tell us:  we want to play the song for you on our dance floor this year!

You know what I'm talking about... the song that makes your feet move, your heart soar, your body come alive!  The one that makes you fall in love, utterly or almost, with your partner, for just that moment?  Which is yours?  Email us:  we want to know 1) the name of the song, 2) the artist, and 3) the dance you like to dance to it!  We want to add it to our playlist for you!

5) Get into the dance FREE!
If you are a USA Dance Member or a college student, volunteer at the front desk for half an hour and you get into the dance free!  You'd be greeting friends as they arrive, helping them to sign in, giving your feet/knee/hip a break, and all the while watching fabulous dancing on the floor!  Thank you for your support!  Check in to see slot availability when you arrive.

(NOTE:  this opportunity is available on a dance by dance basis as slots become available at the discretion of and subject to the approval of USA Dance Board members.)
