1) Meet...
Rosy Noguchi, Winner
of USA Dance Charlottesville's
"Artistic dancers or Dancing Artists?" Competition!

Dancing university student artists were invited to submit original artwork capturing the essence of each of the ten following dances: Rumba, Cha cha, Samba, Paso Doble, Jive (swing), Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep.  The winner's work is to be used exclusively by our chapter for publicity purposes, and in return s/he receives a stipend, free admission to one of our dances, and year-long public exposure of his/her work.  Rosy Noguchi is our winner this year, and her waltz sketch is featured at the top of this newsletter!  Look for her other sketches all year, with a sneak preview display at our upcoming dance on Saturday February 23rd!

Rosy is a fourth-year UVA student from Alexandria majoring in environmental sciences and studying Japanese as a hobby.  She was introduced to ballroom dancing when she was very young but didn't start dancing herself until high school.  She was not so interested in dancing at first, but loved to watch the energetic routines at her grandmother's studio showcases, captivated by the sparkly gowns.  She didn't get serious until she joined the UVA Ballroom Club in her first semester and has been hooked ever since!  To this day she still loves to look at the gowns, and daydream about the perfect dress... it's her motivation to make improvements!

Rosy tells us that she has always loved international style rumba because it is "so slinky" and "has great music."  She loves "how the moves are really drawn out and smooth, but also very sharp at times.  You have more time to really ham up the performance and really exaggerate every movement in the body."  In the future she'd also love to try her feet at paso doble!

A little known fact about Rosy:  she has a twin!  (She doesn't attend UVA.)  They share a love for pretty dance dresses; when they were little they would comb the dance floors for rhinestones with plans of making their own dress using all of the rhinestones found ("hey, rhinestones are expensive, ok!").

Keep your eye out for Rosy on the dance floor!  And watch out too... she confesses that stopping suddenly to evaluate the quality of a sparkly item on a dance floor is a habit that she hasn't quite yet overcome.
