Flood insurance bill wins U.S. House passage

The House of Representatives, in a rare act of bipartisanship, overwhelmingly passed a bill to protect millions of American homeowners and businesses from dramatic increases in their flood insurance premiums. The bill would limit annual increases of any individual policy under the National Flood Insurance Program to no more than 18 percent.

 

IICRC Launches premier issue of "The Journal"

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) has published the inaugural issue of its peer-reviewed technical journal, "The Journal of Cleaning, Restoration & Inspection" (The Journal). It features four technical, peer-reviewed articles on hard-surface cleaning, textile cleaning, disaster restoration and inspection. The Journal publishes six times a year and is a new benefit for IICRC Certified Firms, master cleaners and restorers, inspectors, instructors and schools.

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) announced that it is revising the IICRC S100-2011 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Cleaning of Textile Floor Coverings. The revised draft of S100 Standard is available now for public review and comment.

Winter storm's damage in S.C. is estimated at $120M, officials say 

South Carolina incurred an estimated $120 million or more in damage and cleanup costs as a result of a winter storm last month, state officials said.

Flood recovery gets $1.1 billion in Alberta budget

The Redford government has budgeted up to $1.1 billion to be spent on flood recovery and mitigation projects over the next three years. The province will spend up to $155 million over the next year in flood relocation, addiction and mental health support, rebates to small businesses and property tax relief for landowners.

Register for the convention by March 31st and save

Registration rates for the International Restoration Convention & Industry Expo go up $100 on April 1, so don't get fooled into paying more. Full registration includes education sessions, access to the exhibition hall, the opening Pool Party Networking Reception courtesy of Sunbelt Rentals, and some meals. Deadline for room reservations is Sunday, March 16th to get the RIA rate and guarantee room availability.

 

TPA Panel closes RIA Convention

Don't plan to skip out early on the RIA Convention, or you'll miss a Q&A session with the leaders of three major third-party administrators: Paul Gross, Code Blue; Jonathan Miko, Alacrity Services; and Larry Thomas, Crawford Contractor Connection. As the insurance restoration industry continues to evolve, so does the role of the third-party administrator. The panelists will address the changing role of the TPA, the challenges they encounter, their expectations of contractor vendors, how they handle major catastrophes, and much more.

The RIA Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 to highlight the accomplishments of RIA's certificants who have attained their certifications, honor those who have given countless hours of service to the organization, and recognize volunteers and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their field. Awards presented include the Phoenix Awards for Innovation in Restoration and Reconstruction, service awards, the Martin L. King Award, the Golden Quill Award and the Advanced Certification Induction Ceremony. An additional ticket must be purchased for this event.

NIBS president addresses role of standards development

Standards are playing a key role in making the Nation's buildings safer. Fire deaths have declined significantly and new buildings incorporate lessons learned from previous hazards. These improvements are largely the result of strong building codes and a regulatory system focused at the state and local level and were developed by private-sector organizations. RIA Restoration Council seeks new members

The Restoration Council is accepting applications from qualified RIA members interested in influencing the direction of the restoration industry at large through presentations of industry-specific technical and business educational programs via the RIA convention, industry seminars, training courses, and publications.

 

Requirements:

  • RIA member owners and senior managers
  • 7 + years industry experience in one or more service lines of emergency services, mitigation, and reconstruction
  • Satisfactory completion of multiple industry technical training courses
  • Advanced industry designations are a plus
  • References

 

Restoration Council participation requires 8-10 hours monthly, and the Council meets periodically throughout the year via conference call and at the RIA Convention. Members are responsible for personal travel expenses. Email Valorie Peduto for more details.
