Contractors fined for violating lead paint rule

A subcontractor hired to perform a window renovation project at a school in Kittery, Maine, and the general contractor hired to oversee the renovation of the school will pay fines as part of two settlements with EPA. James J. Welch & Co., Inc., of Salem, Mass., will pay a penalty of $3,565, while New Hampshire Plate Glass Corp. of Portsmouth, N.H., will pay a fine of $10,890 for allegedly violating EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule. JJ Welch was the primary contractor and NH Glass was hired as a subcontractor.

RIA releases asbestos fact sheets

RIA recently released two versions of a fact sheet addressing asbestos issues restoration contractors may encounter in the course of their restoration projects. The comprehensive version addresses asbestos-containing materials, health issues, regulations, classes of asbestos work, hazard communication, training, control measures and resources. The abridged version covers health issues, regulations and some training information. Both may be downloaded for free from the RIA website, www.restorationindustry.org through the RIA Store.

Britain's weather service says it sees the tentacles of climate change in a spate of storms and floods battering the country, but has stopped short of saying that global warming directly caused the extreme conditions.

ASHRAE/IES energy standard gains 30 percent savings over 2004 standard
The requirements of the 2013 revision of an energy standard recently published by ASHRAE and IES will result in buildings achieving 6-8% more efficiency than buildings built to the 2010 standard.
ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2013, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, provides minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design of buildings except low-rise residential buildings.

 

ACCA publishes technical bulletin on ANSI/ASHRAE 62.2

ACCA has published a new Technical Bulletin entitled "Ensuring ASHRAE 62.2-2013 Ventilation Compliance for Residential Structures."

 

RIA Restoration Council seeks new members

The Restoration Council is accepting applications from qualified RIA members interested in influencing the direction of the restoration industry at large through presentations of industry-specific technical and business educational programs via the RIA convention, industry seminars, training courses, and publications.

 

Requirements:

  • RIA member owners and senior managers
  • 7 + years industry experience in one or more service lines of emergency services, mitigation, and reconstruction
  • Satisfactory completion of multiple industry technical training courses
  • Advanced industry designations are a plus
  • References

 

Restoration Council participation requires 8-10 hours monthly, and the Council meets periodically throughout the year via conference call and at the RIA Convention. Members are responsible for personal travel expenses. Email Valorie Peduto for more details.

Annual Awards Banquet

The RIA Awards Banquet will be held on Thursday, April 10, 2014 to highlight the accomplishments of RIA's certificants who have attained their certifications, honor those who have given countless hours of service to the organization, and recognize volunteers and individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their field. Awards presented include the Phoenix Awards for Innovation in Restoration and Reconstruction, service awards, the Martin L. King Award, the Golden Quill Award and the Advanced Certification Induction Ceremony. An additional ticket must be purchased for this event.

 

Register for the convention by March 31st and save

Registration rates for the International Restoration Convention & Industry Expo go up $100 on April 1, so don't get fooled into paying more. Full registration includes education sessions, access to the exhibition hall, the opening Pool Party Networking Reception courtesy of Sunbelt Rentals, and some meals.

RIA Certified Restorer Curriculum Available for Open Industry Review

RIA Certified Restorer Curriculum is now available for an Open Industry Review.  The CR Curriculum document features four major domains of knowledge: leadership, management, scientific and technical, which will be needed by the 21st Century Certified Restorer (CR) in order to show competency in the field. The Curriculum encompasses fire and smoke, water, environmental issues, contents restoration and leadership. The RIA CR Curriculum is the first document of its kind created within the restoration industry and will be the basis for industry educators to create specialized courses of study specific to the Certified Restorer.

 

The Open Industry Review will run from February 17, 2014 through March 17, 2014. Those interested in participating can email chereth@restorationindustry.org to obtain the appropriate documents to begin the review process.
