Mold abatement will be key issue for state lawmakers in 2014, AIHA says

One of the key issues for lawmakers this year will be mold abatement. States have to determine whether it should be regulated and if those involved in this type of work should be licensed. However, as some states are attempting to set exposure limits, others are trying to set standards or create legislation to abate and remediate.

 

IICRC releases new standard for professional inspection of textile floorcoverings

The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) announces the publication of a new ANSI-approved Standard - ANSI/IICRC S800 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Inspection of Textile Floorcoverings (1st edition, 2014).  ANSI/IICRC S800 defines basic operational procedures and techniques for inspecting/evaluating: carpet types, characteristics and conditions; specification; installation procedures; and post-installation maintenance and cleaning.

Mississippi House committee passes hurricane insurance disclosure bill

Lawmakers could require insurers to disclose how much they collect in premiums and how much they pay in claims in each ZIP code. House Bill 753 could spark more debate over how much coastal homeowners are charged to cover against hurricanes, as well as make it clearer what areas private wind insurers are avoiding.

Staten Islanders who experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy could be on their way to avoid even more financial disaster after the United States Senate passed legislation that would block sharply higher flood insurance bills for at least for four years. The legislation now goes to the House, where prospects for passage are not guaranteed. Paul Davis named as 2014 NARI regional contractor of the year

 

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has recognized Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Suburban Maryland and Washington, DC, as a 2014 Regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) in the category of Entire House $250,000 to $500,000 for the remodeling project located in Damascus, Md. The Paul Davis office will be honored at NARI's Evening of Excellence reception in March in New Orleans, La.

RIA Certified Restorer Curriculum Available for Open Industry Review

RIA Certified Restorer Curriculum is now available for an Open Industry Review.  The CR Curriculum document features four major domains of knowledge: leadership, management, scientific and technical, which will be needed by the 21st Century Certified Restorer (CR) in order to show competency in the field. The Curriculum encompasses fire and smoke, water, environmental issues, contents restoration and leadership. The RIA CR Curriculum is the first document of its kind created within the restoration industry and will be the basis for industry educators to create specialized courses of study specific to the Certified Restorer.

 

The Open Industry Review will run from February 17, 2014 through March 17, 2014. Those interested in participating can email chereth@restorationindustry.org to obtain the appropriate documents to begin the review process.
