Polar Vortex prompts early-bird discount extension

The Polar Vortex sweeping the U.S. has kept most of the industry very busy, prompting RIA to extend its early-bird discount by a week to Friday, February 7th.  Registration prices jump $100 per person on Saturday. With another wave of snow storms forecast this week, Florida in April will be a popular destination.

 

IICRC celebrates opening of new Global Resource Center

Following IICRC's winter board of directors meeting, the organization celebrated the grand opening of its new Global Resource Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Attendees were able to tour the facility and network with industry professionals. IICRC also elected independent insurance adjuster, Peter Crosa, to fill an open seat on their board of directors.

Man dies from CO poisoning while cleaning carpets

Al Batson, Jr., was killed while cleaning the carpet inside a Hermitage, Tenn., home and police believe he likely succumbed to carbon monoxide fumes from the generator-powered machine inside his van. The van was parked in the home's garage with the doors shut. Police are awaiting the toxicology report to confirm the cause of death.

Mississippi House Insurance Committee approves bills on health insurance, hurricanes

HB Bill 756 would create new regulations on hurricane deductibles. It would clarify the "trigger" for when a hurricane deductible takes effect and when it ends, roughly from the time a named-storm watch or warning for Mississippi starts until 24 hours after the last one expires.

Holiday storms in U.K. result in$702M in insured losses: ABI

Storms and flooding in the United Kingdom over the recent holiday period will cost insurers about £426 million ($702.2 million), the London-based Association of British Insurers said. Storms between Dec. 28 and Jan. 8 resulted in 174,000 claims from businesses, homeowners and auto owners.

 

U.K. hits carpet recycling target

Figures released by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK), Stockport, England, indicate that 107,000 metric tons of scrap carpet was reused, recycled and recovered in the United Kingdom in 2013, a 21% increase from the prior year.

 

Bushfires in Australia deadlier and costlier

The Australian

An analysis by News Corp Australia has revealed that the combined damage of bushfires over the past 90 years is almost $7 billion, with $2.6 billion of damage caused in the past 13 years. Experts anticipate that these figures will continue to escalate as more residents move into bushland.

ACAC celebrates a very good year 

The number of new candidates seeking board-awarded certifications in 2013 from the American Council for Accredited Certification (ACAC)  exceeded the previous year by 50%. Certifications were awarded to professionals in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, Guam, Hong Kong, Jamaica, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Trinidad, Tobago and the United States.

Local resident and Rainbow International associate Craig Gjelsten has been named one of five recipients for the 2013 Volunteer of the Year award by Mission Waco. "Craig is a great reflection of The Dwyer Group Code of Values at work and in our community," said Dina Dwyer-Owens, chairwoman and CEO of The Dwyer Group.

 

Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Southeast Wisconsin wins NARI - Wisconsin Remodeler Awards*

 

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) has named Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Southeast Wisconsin as a winner in a variety of 2013 Wisconsin Remodeler Award (WRA) categories. Specifically, the company was honored with a Gold

Award for the Bourbon and Tunns Tavern in the Disaster Fire Restoration category. Paul Davis also won Silver awards for a local, residential bathroom remodeling project from $30,000 to $60,000 and a local residential kitchen remodeling project from $40,000 to $80,000.
