OSHA launches website to promote hospital safety

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched a new educational website designed to help hospitals prevent on-site employee injuries and enhance patient safety. The Worker Safety in Hospitals website contains a library of factbooks, self-assessment tools and best practice guides for hospital risk managers seeking to identify and address workplace safety needs, improve patient handling programs and implement more comprehensive safety and health management systems within their facilities.

 

RIA Convention early-bird registration ends January 31st

Given this winter's cold temperatures, Florida is looking like a smart idea and attendees can save $100 off of the regular registration rate for the 2014 International Restoration Convention & Industry Expo if they register for the event by Friday, January 31st.The RIA Convention will be held at the Marriott World Center in Orlando, Fla., from April 9-11. Study indicates carpet maintains indoor air quality

A series of studies indicates that effectively cleaned carpets can trap allergens and other particles, resulting in fewer particles escaping into the air and thus contributing to the maintenance of indoor air quality. "These studies challenge the long held belief that carpet must adversely impact indoor air quality as it pertains to allergy and asthma sufferers," said Dr. Bruce Mitchell, Chairman/CEO of Airmid Healthgroup limited, leading independent biometrical research organization that conducted the study. "Effectively cleaned carpets have the capacity to trap allergens and microbial particles, making these particles less available to become airborne and thus maintaining indoor air quality."

After more than a decade of increases since Hurricane Wilma struck in 2005, homeowner's insurance is finally coming down in Florida, according to a report by the insurance commissioner. However, the average premium for most Floridians is almost double the national average.

 

Travelers' profits jump after year of fewer catastrophic storms

A calmer fourth quarter with fewer catastrophic weather events pushed Travelers Cos. earnings above analyst expectations, as the property-casualty insurer closed out the year with a threefold increase in profits.

The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) will host the inaugural Cleaning Expo Scotland show on September 3-4, 2014. Cleaning Expo Scotland brings together buyers and suppliers representing every part of the cleaning industry. All visitors can attend the show free of charge.

 

New Zealand: More than 600 damage claims flood in to Earthquake Commission

A spokeswoman for the Earthquake Commission said they had received more than 600 claims following the 6.2-magnitude earthquake that rattled the lower North Island, Stuff.co.nz reported.

 

There have been several reports of property damage. Fonterra Co-operative Group Ltd.'s Pahiatua distribution storage center suffered damage from the quake.

Fires across South Australia cause estimated $8.8 million in damage

Fires across South Australia have caused an estimated $10 million Australian ($8.8 million) in damage, ABC reported. Overall, 1,700 livestock have been lost in the state because of the fires. The biggest fire affected more than 71,000 hectares in the upper south east at Ngarkat Conservation Park.

N.M. comp bill would deny benefits to workers under the influence

New Mexico legislators are considering a bill that would prevent workers compensation benefits from being paid to workers who are injured while intoxicated on the job, and also deny benefits to workers who don't submit to drug testing.

 

Remodeling market continues upward trend 

The National Association of the Remodeling Industry's (NARI) fourth-quarter Remodeling Business Pulse (RBP) data of current and future remodeling business conditions continues to show growth. Although remodelers report the highest overall rating on business conditions at 6.51, (from 6.41 last quarter), numbers in most other categories experienced a slight drop.

Brian Mauriello has joined American Integrity Restoration as the chief sales & marketing officer.  Previously, he was the Vice President, Sales & Marketing for Kinsley Power Systems - the Western New England distributor for Kohler Emergency backup power systems. Mauriello was also with United Rentals, where he worked in Fleet Operations and Sales & Marketing at Headquarters.

 

Rainbow International appoints new president

Mark Welstead has been appointed president of Rainbow International, a subsidiary of The Dwyer Group, and succeeds Rob White, who resigned to take another opportunity closer to his family in Virginia. Welstead had served as vice president of operations since 2012.

 

Paul Davis Restoration wins Wisconsin award

Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling of Southeast Wisconsin has received three Silver awards for Remodeler of the Year and two Bronze awards for Remodeler of the Year from the Milwaukee/NARI Home Improvement Council Inc. Wisconsin Remodeler Association awards for residential projects.

Weaver named vice president of sales at CRDN

Matthew Weaver has been named vice president of sales at the Certified Restoration Drycleaning Network (CRDN). Previously, Weave spent near 20 years in the insurance industry, most recently Allied Insurance, a subsidiary of Nationwide Insurance.
