Catastrophes caused $31B in insured losses in 2013: Munich Re

Natural catastrophes caused global insured losses of about $31 billion in 2013, considerably below the 2003-2012 10-year average of approximately $56 billion, according to an analysis by Munich Reinsurance Co. However, the 2013 number exceeds the 10-year average - 880 in 2013 compared with an average of 790.

Many people suffer from indoor allergies during the cold winter months. Although these indoor allergies are sometimes confused with the common cold, if the condition lasts for more than 10 days, the cause is likely due to allergies and not a cold.

 

Older firefighters may be more resilient to working in heat

Older firefighters who are chronically exposed to heat stress on the job could be more heat resilient over time. A recent study published in the December issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene (JOEH) found that older firefighters may be able to tolerate more challenging or arduous work environments before they feel affected by the heat, compared to non-heat-exposed workers who would need to stop work prematurely.
