Menendez: Vote to delay flood insurance rate hikes could happen in late January or early February

Some homeowners say recent changes will cause their flood insurance premiums to skyrocket - costing them tens of thousands of dollars a year and threatening their ability to stay in their homes after Superstorm Sandy. That's prompted legislators, including Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-Louisiana) and Sen. Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey), to delay some of the Biggert-Waters reforms through new legislation, The Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act. If passed, it would delay rate increases for four years, except for businesses and homes that have repeatedly flooded.

West Virginia lawmakers raise flood insurance concerns

West Virginia legislative leaders plan to talk to members of Congress about the rising cost of flood insurance. House Speaker Tim Miley says state residents and small business owners have been hit with "shockingly high" flood insurance costs since Congress revised the National Flood Insurance Program in 2012.

 

Sunshine State has the highest homeowner insurance rates in nation

Floridians are paying the highest homeowner insurance rates in the nation even though the state has not been hit by a hurricane in nearly a decade. A recently released national report shows the average premium for most Florida homeowners is $1,933 a year, or nearly twice the national average of $978. Five of the six states with the highest rates are along the Gulf of Mexico.

Canada: Fire at Heinz factory causes nearly $19 million in damage

A fire at H.J. Heinz Co.'s factory in Ontario, Canada, has resulted in $15 million Canadian ($14 million) to CAD $20 million ($18.6 million) in damage, The Argus Observer reported.

RIA announces keynote speakers

Chip Lackey, Senior Director responsible for Vehicle Valuation Services and Claims in the Insurance Practice at J.D. Power will give the opening keynote address at the RIA Convention. Lackey will present an overview of the property insurance industry, addressing what really matters to insurers, and identifying the metrics and measurements they follow. Bryan Koon, Director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, will deliver the second keynote address on how restoration contractors can work most effectively with emergency management agencies; what information agencies need in advance from contractors; and provide recommendations on credentialing and accessing areas after a disaster.

 

ASHRAE publishes revised standard on ventilation in health care facilities 

ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE Standard 170-2013, Ventilation of Health Care Facilities, a newly revised standard for ventilation of health care facilities,can help designers by providing the minimum requirements for the design of ventilation systems for health care facilities to provide environmental control for comfort, as well as infection and odor control.

Disaster One: Helping a veteran get into a home

Marine Sgt. Nathan Harris was badly wounded in Afghanistan.Disaster One came alongside Crescent Rotary and other organizations to prepare a home for Sgt. Harris. Through donations of time, services, furniture, and building materials, a foreclosed house was transformed into an obstacle-free home. Disaster One served as the general contractor for the home renovation and oversaw all of the work. Elrod Electrical Services and Air Quality Heating and Cooling donated all of the electrical, HVAC and plumbing work.
