TopStoriesN.Y. governor warns insurers not to charge hurricane deductibles

Reuters

The governors of New York, New Jersey and other U.S. states said on Wednesday that insurance companies should not charge hurricane deductibles that cost tens of thousands of dollars to state homeowners who file claims for damage from Sandy because it was labeled a "post-tropical storm" by the time it hit land.

Eqecat estimates insured damages from Sandy between $10B and $20B

Business Insurance

Catastrophe modeling firm Eqecat Inc. issued its post-landfall estimates for Superstorm Sandy on Thursday, pegging insured losses at between $10 billion and $20 billion, and total economic damage between $30 billion and $50 billion.

EPA approves emergency fuel waiver for New Jersey

EPA has exercised its authority under the Clean Air Act to temporarily waive federal clean diesel fuel requirements in New Jersey to allow the use of home heating oil in most generators and pumps in emergency service in New Jersey. The waiver was granted by EPA in coordination with the Department of Energy (DOE). EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson determined that, as a result of effects of Hurricane Sandy, extreme and unusual supply circumstances exist, which may result in a temporary shortage of diesel fuel compliant with federal regulations.  The federal waivers will help ensure an adequate supply of fuel for emergency response in New Jersey. The waiver temporarily allows the use of heating oil in emergency generators and pumps if ultra low-sulfur fuel is not available. The waiver will not apply to a small subset of diesel engines used in generators and pumps that could be damaged by the high sulfur fuel.

World Trade Center flooded with 20 feet of water

Business Insurance

The basement levels of the World Trade Center are flooded with between 15 feet and 30 feet of water, government officials and Port Authority of New York and New Jersey sources say, the result of the surging sea levels during Superstorm Sandy.

NewTechnologyRochester Midland's Biological Cleaning Technology - Did you know?
By simply adding Rochester Midland's biological cleaning technology into affected areas you can control odors and certain soil loads prior to your cleanup crew arriving! RMC has assisted cleanup efforts from natural disasters like Katrina and recently in Thailand with biological technology. North American Product Manager Bill Gambacort is on site in Sandy-affected areas and available to educate on how to combat, digest and clean better and safer than any other technology in the marketplace. Contractor Orientation to Catastrophic Disaster Work

Catastrophe/disaster restoration work is unlike either building construction or demolition. Based on lessons learned by RIA members following Katrina and other major catastrophes, RIA provides information to contractors seeking working in Sandy's aftermath.

Contractors should consider a host of issues before venturing to the hurricane zone, including financial resources, housing and other necessities, equipment resources and PPE, manpower and the effects of working in a disaster zone, paperwork administration and their exit strategy.

RIA is looking for RIA members working in Sandy's aftermath

If you're an RIA member working in the areas impacted by Hurricane Sandy, please send your company name, a point person, email and a cell phone number to pharman@restorationindustry.org by Monday, November 12th. RIA is sending out a number of releases to the media and fielding inquiries from reporters, and would like to highlight RIA members in any of our responses.

The Restoration Industry Responds to Sandy

The response to RIA's call for personnel and equipment needs and available resources has been overwhelming. Here are the responses received to date. Additional information can be found in the coming weeks on the RIA website in the Personnel & Equipment Clearinghouse section.

RIA makes no warranties or guarantees of the products or services represented in this listing.
