Featured Speakers

Robert McNeely bought his first camera while serving in the Army Infantry in Southeast Asia. He worked as a staff photographer in George McGovern's 1972 presidential campaign and was a staff photographer in the Carter White House from 1976 to 1979 and President Bill Clinton's personal photographer from 1992 to 1998 which led to his book of Black and White imagery (photographed entirely with Leica rangefinder cameras),

magazine named McNeely twice as one of the "Most Important People in Photography" and noted that "McNeely has turned out consistently interesting pictures that combine historic sweep and astonishing intimacy."  He was the Director of Photography at the Presidential Inaugurations of 2001, 2009, and 2013.

His photographs have appeared in Time, Newsweek, Fortune, Vogue, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times Magazine, as well as many European periodicals. Gallery shows, exhibits, and presentations include The Leica Gallery, NYC;  The Smithsonian, Washington, DC; Visa Pour L'Image Photojournalism Festival, Perpignan, France; St. Bonaventure University; Eastman Kodak House, Rochester, NY. Today, as he has done since the beginning of his career, he continues to shoot on the street, wherever in the world he is, in B&W film and print the images on a Leica Focomat IIc.

Frank Hallam Day has been active as a fine art photographer in Washington DC for many years. He has taught photography at Photoworks, at the Washington Center for Photography, and the Smithsonian Institution. His work is in numerous museum and private collections in the United States and abroad. Recent photographic interests include an extensive body of work on the erasure of personal and social memory in East Berlin, and an even larger body of work on the many ramifications of globalization for African identity. He was a winner of the prestigious Bader Prize in 2006, a finalist for the Sondheim Prize in 2007, and has received several grants from the District of Columbia Commission on the Arts and Humanities. He was invited to be the Artist in Residence at Acadia National Park in 2007, and was U.S. Cultural Envoy to Ethiopia, where he mounted several exhibitions and taught workshops in 2008. He has juried and curated numerous photography shows and competitions in the Washington area. He also writes on photography for Photo Review.

Chris Usher was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Chris Usher graduated from the University of Indiana at Bloomington with a degree in Journalism. Usher spent several years as a newspaper photographer before going freelance and moving to Washington, DC in 1990. Usher's photojournalism work appeared regularly in domestic and international publications for more than three decades. He is the recipient of numerous domestic and international awards, including an Eisenstaedt Award (2000) for his unique and controversial depiction of President Clinton's post-acquittal speech. In 2005, Usher's Behind the Velvet Rope, a collection of behind-the-scenes images shot with a Leica while covering the President of the United States, became a traveling exhibition and book. In 2008, he self-published One of Us, selects from his documentation of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. The project was exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, DC in 2008 and will be shown in New Orleans for the 10th anniversary of the event. Since 2009, Usher has been the still photographer for CBS' Face the NationWhen Usher isn't on assignment or at CBS' studios, he can be found at Bokeh Ridge Farm, in the panhandle of West Virginia, with his wife, their seven rescue cats and three retired ponies. If he's not on the tractor, he's probably in the dark room, processing large format photography, the old-fashioned way.

Chris Williams is an experienced photographer with over 15 years of professional experience. He has photographed luminaries such as President Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, and His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama. After 18 years in New Orleans, Chris moved to Washington, DC in 2012. While Chris keeps one foot planted in New Orleans where he continues to do business, he regularly travels the globe documenting historical figures and moments. For personal work, one of his passions is aviation photography.

Lightroom Guru and LHSA Member, Bill Royce will discuss the advantages of using Lightroom in Part One. Part Two will delve into major functions such as face recognition, HDR, panoramic stitching, conversion to monochrome and much more.

NON-LEITZ/LEICA ACCESSORIES - From the Beautiful to the Silly -Friday
25 years ago, Ed Schwartzreich realized straightaway that his budget did not allow for having more than a basic outfit, let alone collecting much of anything. Accessories for Leica that were made by third parties were usually cheap items, often intriguing, occasionally simply silly, at times very useful. Analogous to cleaning out one's sock drawer he will show his collection. You will undoubtedly recognize many of them.

For many of us, Jim Lager represents the "H" in LHSA. Join our renowned LHSA expert as he leads us through the latest historical research of Leica gear as seen through the hardware, packaging, advertising, and the nuts and bolts of what made Leica what it is and what it has become. The annual Trade Fare will be on Saturday morning. Here's your chance to present or sell your wares! This is always an interesting event full of all things Leica - new and old! Interested exhibitors can register on the registration form.

LEICA LENS SHOOTOUT - Saturday
Bill Rosauer, Viewfinder Editor, will be doing another live demonstration of Leica lenses at this year's annual meeting. Bill's will be looking at legacy lenses to see how they perform on the recently introduced Leica Monochrome camera. The new Monochrom has set even higher standards of resolution and high ISO performance, giving new life to our cherished legacy lenses. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lenses to participate in this event. See how these lenses stack up to one another in this comparison "shoot-out."

ANATOMY OF A PROJECT: MUSIC, PHOTOGRAPHY & PROSE - Saturday
Explore how photography can be combined with other creative mediums to enhance your storytelling. Using his highly successful "What Music Means to Me Project" and other projects, Richard Rejino, LHSA Executive Director, will illustrate how he combined his three greatest passions, music, photography and writing, and turned them into a book, a museum exhibit, and a means to communicate the transformative power of music.
