President's Letter

Happy Holidays! I wish you all the joy and fulfilment of the season.

I draw your attention to the articles on our new association management company and on the wonderful photography exhibit by our new executive director. On a prosaic note, this is to bring you up to date on what the board has been doing. I invite your comments and suggestions. Please don't hesitate to contact me, any officer or board member.

Annual Meeting in Dearborn. The financial returns are in. Our policy has always been to make meetings pay for themselves. Considering our losses in recent years, we wanted to do that. In fact, we made a profit of $50.23! Thanks to Madge Brown for such good planning!

2015 Spring Shoot in New Orleans. See below for a preview. We'll have a flyer out in January. Gary Hough and Tom Smith, of Leica Akademie, are planning a workshop with Maggie Steber, and some exciting photo ops. If you want to help Gary plan the event, please contact him at gshough@msn.com

2015 Annual meeting in Washington DC. We've chosen a hotel, the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Crystal City, Arlington, VA. The location is excellent: very close to Reagan National airport; a metro entrance in the lobby of the hotel for easy access by metro (or cab) to sites in DC, Old Town Alexandria or elsewhere. There are many restaurants and shops on the same lobby access to the metro. The meeting facilities are excellent; the guest rooms are high-end Marriott quality. Expect more information as we work out details. Again, any help in planning would be welcome, especially from local members.

Member survey. Thanks to all of you for responding to the recent survey. The results are encouraging, both in quantity and in quality. Statistically, we had an excellent response. We also got a lot of useful comments and suggestions, especially about attracting and keeping members. Most noted: more regional activities; frequent communication using all our media types; balance in what we do between old and new, film and digital, history and technique. The board will use the results in its planning. We'll use the same survey method in future to keep abreast of your thoughts.

Board committees. Did you know the board has committees that are open to any who are interested? If you are interested, please let me know. Here they are:
  • Financial: plans and monitors investments
  • Membership and Marketing: plans and implements programs to attract and retain members
  • Meetings and Activities: plans and executes meetings, coordinates regional activities
  • Publications: publishes the Viewfinder
  • Social Media: monitors and maintains Facebook, forums, newsletters, website and future...
  • Raffle: plans and implements the annual raffle
Of course, if you're interested in becoming a board member to work on projects like these and to help manage the Society for a three-year term, contact me or any officer.

Again, I wish you the happiest of holidays, and all the joy of the season,

Stephen Clowery

Meet Your New LHSA Headquarters

Madeleine Crouch & Co., Inc. is a professional association management company founded in 1983 in Dallas, Texas. MCC partners with thirty professional societies, trade associations and educational non-profits, from local to international in scope. Many of MCC's client associations are involved in education and the arts. The staff of Madeleine Crouch & Co. has over 100 years combined years of association management experience, and your LHSA team is headed up by Richard Rejino, a published professional photographer and author with over 30 years of retail, management and marketing experience.

MCC's offices are centrally located nationally, easily accessible to two large airports in Dallas and just minutes from a number of new and affordable hotels and a wide selection of restaurants. There is an in-house conference room for meetings of ten to twelve people for client meetings, with complimentary space immediately next door for larger meetings. MCC has longstanding professional relationships with vendors and service providers, including a CPA firm with a non-profit specialization in its practice, a law office dedicated to the non-profit sector, professional speakers and facilitators, event planners, printers, Web professionals, programmers and graphic designers, all of whom are available to serve its clients.

In addition to day-to-day management responsibilities, MCC has helped spearhead a number of projects beyond the ordinary for its clients, including fundraising to provide instruments to professional musicians who lost all in the floods that ravaged New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, commissioning a major new work for orchestra from a Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, launching a peer-reviewed, online-only scholarly publication, and assisting a national certifying organization in developing a registration examination and the accompanying policies and procedures.

When MCC's management team does what it does best, your LHSA leadership will have more time to tackle the most challenging issues of the day facing the association, from providing creative, educational and inspiring content, to hosting membership meetings in interesting destinations around the world.

Our Executive Director has a Show in San Diego!

Many of you are aware that we have recently contracted with Madeleine Crouch & Co. to be our new association management company, and that our new Executive Director is Richard Rejino. One of the reasons we were attracted to MCC is because of their keen interest in photography. In particular, Richard is a part-time professional photographer, and his first gallery showing, based on his book, What Music Means to Me, just opened at the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California. Click here to view a TV news piece on the exhibit.

The What Music Means to Me Project was begun by Richard to raise public awareness of the benefits of music in education and in the quality of life through original photographs and personal testimonials. Together they illustrate the profound impact that music-making has had on individuals from diverse backgrounds at various stages in their lives. Richard's vision and work got the attention of the Museum of Making Music and became the inspiration for a unique exhibition that will be on display from December 12, 2014 through August 30, 2015.

The exhibit is interactive. The viewer is first invited to experience the physical exhibition and the impact that music-making has had on others - captured in words and images, and in video. The exhibit incorporates original video footage, photography and quotes from people of all ages for whom music has proved essential and life-changing.

Secondly, viewers are encouraged to share their story with the Museum of Making Music in several ways by writing down their story and posting it in the museum; by making an audio or video recording in a special recording booth that is part of the exhibit; or by submitting their story online. The exhibit will run from December 2014 through August 31, 2015. For more information visit www.museumofmakingmusic.org.

Congratulations, Richard!
