What's new in
the Viewfinder?

- Bill Rosauer, Editor

Viewfinder 47/2 will be off the press and in the mail this week to you. I'm sure you will really enjoy this issue! We are planning issue 47/3 now with a submission deadline of June 9th.

Last week, Leica celebrated the grand opening of Leitz Park in Wetzlar, the birthplace of the Leica. Several of our members, including Jim Lager, Rolf Fricke, Doug Drumheller, and David Farkas, were on hand for the festivities. I am hoping to have a report on this historic event in the next issue.

Leica recently announced a potential milestone camera for the company, the Leica T. In the new Viewfinder, I touched on the significance of this new camera model and line for Leica on my Editor's Page. We are also planning to have a complete report on this exciting new camera in a future issue.

Part One of my Bokeh Kings article is also in the new issue. Hopefully you will be inspired to bring your rare and unusual Leica and compatible lenses to the Dearborn meeting to participate in the Bokeh shootout we have planned.  Let me know what lenses you'd like to bring to the event. It will be interesting to see these lenses go head to head and see their very unique characteristics first hand!

LHSA Archive Project

In April, a group of dedicated board members and historical experts traveled to Louisville, KY, to review and document the contents of materials housed at The Data Vault records storage facility owned by LHSA Past President Dick Gladden.  Many thanks to Dick and his capable team for their assistance!  The project was organized by President Doug Drumheller and took four full days.  Doug's President's letter in the new Viewfinder issue will have more about the project.

Featured Image - Point Reyes National Seashore

- by Gary Hough

Gary Hough captured this stunning image in the tree tunnel at Point Reyes National Seashore last October, just as the fog was rolling in.  "This is the shot Bill Thomas wishes he had gotten," said Gary.  (Prior to Gary's visit, Bill had given him a tip about the tunnel).

Gary's image has been accepted into the Edmonds (WA) Art Festival photo competition.  Congratulations, Gary!

Photo Essay  "Viewfinding"

- by Gordon Smith

This past winter, my long-awaited M arrived from Dan Tamarkin in frozen Chicago.  It wasn't easy to give up the faithful M9 that had been around the world with me several times, but while waiting for the M, I studied the new features that the M would deliver.

One thing I was curious about - why are there three different viewfinder options?

Read Gordon's article.

BOOK REVIEW
LHSA member José Manuel Serrano Esparza wrote an in-depth review of Magnum Contact Sheets by Kristen Lubben.  This is a landmark book in the history of photography. An incorrect link was given for the review in the last issue of Focal Point.  Our apologies!
