The 45th Annual Meeting held October 29-November 3, 2013 in San Francisco was a big success! Many new members and first time attendees were there. Members enjoyed a number of photo ops with Photo Safari Network and exploring neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Nob Hill, and the Mission District. Thank you, Gary Gullett and Jack Ottaway!  Program Director Jim Vestal did an outstanding job lining up speakers for the Saturday program, including banquet speaker Deanne Fitzmaurice, a Pultizer Prize winning photojournalist. Thanks, Jim, for your hard work.

After the meeting, several members accompanied Leica Akademie instructors Thomas Brichta and Justin Stailey to Yosemite National Park for three days of shooting and personal instruction. (Photos above were provided by member Bob Hurt).

Toru Tanaka wins a Dodge & Burn shirt for the most interesting and rare Leica during the "Show & Tell." The program was the idea of Gary Hough, with Leica expert Jim Lager presiding.  It was such a hit that we plan to offer the Show & Tell at the next meeting!

Membership Presentation at San Francisco
Membership Marketing Chairperson Gary Hough gave a rousing presentation about the status of LHSA and the many positive things happening within the society.  Gary has been the backbone of the LHSA marketing effort and has made a real difference in 2013!

I made this photo in Berlin. It was cold and rainy. I went along the streets, people looked a bit tired and most of them were in a hurry to reach their warm flats. Overall, it looked like a normal, rainy day in October with all the stress, individualism and all-day routine that usually happen in a big city like Berlin. However, when I reached "Unter den Linden" the scenery changed completely, the sun came out, people slowed down.  I got very excited and took this picture with my Leica MM,  50mm Summilux 1.4 ASPH! It shows how much impact light has on our perception and mood.

Photo Essay

San Francisco certainly provides a rich array of street backdrops and street photography. During my recent visit, I ventured to the Powell Street/ Market Street cable car turn-around area. Street musicians were being moved to a new location by SFPD when this gentleman, blaring his message regarding where we would all end up while clutching his good book, noisily appeared and was immediately surrounded. He apparently knew his rights and was left alone to condemn us all. After about 15 minutes of this loud harangue, he was carefully hustled to other quarters!
