Member of the Week
The Member of the Week for October 24-28 is Portage Township Trustee. Township Government is one of the oldest forms of government; dating back to the 17th-century. Township Government is a "grassroots" form of government, often at the forefront of assisting residents in need. Portage Township; the largest township in Porter County, is comprised of the City of Portage, unincorporated Porter County; including the South Haven Community and the Town of Ogden Dunes. The Portage Township Trustee uniquely serves the community through Community Service Programs, Fire & EMS, Parks & Recreation, Senior Services, Township Assistance and Township Cemeteries. Township Facilities include: The Portage Township Trustee's Office, The Bonner Senior Center, Field of Dreams Park, Haven Hallow Park, Jim Lynch Park, Evergreen Fields, McCool Cemetery, Black Cemetery, James|Schrock Cemetery and the South Haven Fire Department. Collecting for 500 Turkeys  The Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce has signed up to collect 200 boxes of Jello for 500 Turkeys. 500 Turkeys will provide 1000 local families with a Thanksgiving Meal this year. You can help the Chamber reach our goal by bringing boxes of Jello to the Chamber office or events. Thank you! Is your organization interested in helping to collect items? Register Here Upcoming Google Workshops  The Gre ater Portage Chamber of Commerce with help from John Schmoeger from Bluewater 360 Virtual Media will be hosting a series of Google Workshops. The next workshop will focus on growing your business online with Google. Learn how to use Google Search, promote your website, and use Search Engine Marketing. Please join us for the second workshop in the series on November 4th, 7:30a at the Best Western Plus. Registrations are not mandatory but will help us plan for materials. Public Input Needed
Portage Township Trustee
A public meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 between 6-8p at the Bonner Senior Center, 5800 Lexington Avenue, Portage, IN, to collect public comment for the Portage Township Parks and Recreation Master Plan. The Master Plan is a five-year guide for the growth and management of the Township's outdoor recreation resources. Residents will have the opportunity to complete a questionnaire, learn more about the project, and provide important feedback on the needs of the Township's park system. Residents may also complete the questionnaire prior to the meeting. Surveys are available on-line by visiting www.link.com or in paper format at the Portage Township Trustee's office located at 3484 Airport Road, Portage, IN
New Combined Occupational Medicine Services
Workforce Health
La Porte Hospital and Porter Regional Hospital have combined their occupational medicine services to form one new comprehensive program called Workforce Health. The new service combines the unique strengths of both occupational health and wellness initiatives under one umbrella to serve Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan businesses.Workforce Health has four conveniently-located comprehensive occupational health clinics with in-house X-ray and physical therapy in Valparaiso, Portage, La Porte and South Bend. Foundation awards Sparking the Arts grants to four nonprofits
Porter County Community Foundation
Sparking the Arts is dedicated to fostering a more visible role for the arts in Porter County. Each year
Sparking the Arts awards grants to promote the arts, while building an endowment to support creativity forever. This year, the Foundation was pleased to recognize four outstanding organizations
 with grant funding to help them continue their contribution to Porter County's artistic landscape. Chicago Street Theatre received a grant to help fund next summer's Shakespeare in the Park Festival. Frontline Foundations, a state certified substance abuse and addiction outpatient treatment provider, will use their grant to help fund the mobile art apparel printing equipment called Ironclad. The Memorial Opera House will use their grant to help fund their Theater for a New Audience program. The Duneland Family YMCA's grant will allow them to support their art programs and engage people of all ages, from early childhood and youth programs, to new plans for Seniors and Mature Adults.
Retired and Senior Volunteers Collection
United Way of Porter County
United Way Retired and Senior Volunteer program of Northwest Indiana is hosting two collection drives: one for personal care items and the other for handmade winter clothing items for the upcoming holiday season. Items donated will be gifted to the homeless, poor, veterans and overseas troops. Personal care items are being collected now through January 1. Trunk or Treat at Founders Square
City of Portage
The City of Portage will be hosting Trunk or Treat on Friday, October 28th from 5pm-8pm. The public is encouraged to attend this free event. If a business or organization would like to participate in the event they may pass out information about the business/organization but are also asked to pass out candy or goodies as well. FAFSA Fridays assist with College Readiness
United Way of Porter County
United Way of Porter County is offering free FAFSA filing services the second Friday each month now until March 10, 2017 thanks to a new partnership with Valparaiso University. This service is available to all Northwest Indiana residents applying for college financial aid, including but not limited to, high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students. Participation is by appointment only. Participants should bring a hard copy of their 2015 income tax information, including W2, and the student's social security number with them to the appointment. Appointments are approximately 30 minutes long and available from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. the second Friday of the month at United Way of Porter County, 951 Eastport Centre Drive, Valparaiso.
