SouthFair Partners With the Be Covered Texas Campaign

Southfair is proud to partner with Be Covered Texas in our mission to promote neighborhood revitalization for the residents of South Dallas.

Be Covered Texas is a campaign focused on helping uninsured Texans understand how the new healthcare law impacts them and how to prepare for the upcoming changes. The campaign provides user-friendly information and on-the-ground guidance to help families understand the new health care law.

Starting October 1st, new options for health insurance will become available and you may qualify for subsidies to help make health care more affordable for you and your family.  We are excited to partner with Be Covered Texas because we believe that access to information about the new health care law is vital for those in our community.

We encourage you to learn more about the health care changes coming this fall.

To find out how the new health care law affects you, visit the Be Covered website: www.becoveredtexas.org.

Fair Park Estates: Two Graduates of the Rent-To-Own Program

SouthFair is proud to congratulate its first two graduates of its rent-to-own program, Vinent & Scefenia Dent and Danny Banks.

The Dents transitioned through the rent-to-own program

Dents 2835 South
Vincent & Scefenia Dent
in roughly eight months. In Mr. Dent's own words, "On March 7, 2013 my wife and I became the first proud graduates of SouthFair's rent-to-own program! There is the likelihood that we may not have been able to become homeowners without the availability and the assistance of this awesome program. The wonderful staff of South Fair CDC guided and encouraged us throughout each step of the process by providing us with the education, training and tools to be successful. It was so greatly appreciated. We definitely recommend this program to those who wish to pursue their dream of owning a home."

It took Mr. Banks a brief six months to become mortgage ready. Even though he was a little nervous with the process he stayed positive and just took it one step at a time.

Congratulations to both families! We will be celebrating more graduates of our rent-to-own program very soon.

Lending a Helping Hand . . . Providing Summer Meals and School Supplies

Summer Meals

SouthFair supports the community that it serves through various means. One newest community initiative is to assist in providing some of our youth that need it most, with nutritious meals during the summer. SouthFair's participation in the summer food service program is thanks to meals provided by S.O.U.L. Movement.

We would like to thank S.O.U.L. Movement for providing meals for the students. Their "goal is the elimination of childhood hunger among youth in at risk communities where resources are limited. The organization focuses on providing long-term solutions to youth in the areas of hunger and health and nutrition."

One of SouthFair's board members, LaKisha Stark, bought this community project to SouthFair. She is a Homeless Attorney with North West Legal Aid. Thanks LaKisha!

School Supply Donations

The donation request to support Southfair's Back to School efforts for the 2013-2014 school year has begun. This is SouthFair's second year providing school supplies to the residents in our houses and apartment communities. The donations help give deserving resident's children school supplies, backpacks, and uniforms for the upcoming school year. We are not only supporting our own residents, we are also helping six homeless students from Madison High School start their school year with supplies as well.

Your donation will greatly enhance our efforts to improve our communities as well as provide publicity for your organization. Please use the link below to the left, under Donations, to access our pledge form. We also accept school supplies and gift cards.

SouthFair Supports the Fair Park Merchants Association

SouthFair is working to help revitalize the Fair Park Merchants Association (FMPA). The FPMA has been dormant for the past few years. There has been great momentum received from various merchants and others in the community with this revitalization effort. Once some preliminary strategic planning is completed the FPMA will hold regular monthly meetings and will begin accepting new members.  We will keep you posted!

A big thank you to Capital One for their $1,000 grant provided to the FPMA. Roy Lopez, Capital One's Sr. Manager and CRA Business Development Officer continues to be very supportive of this group's efforts. This grant will be used to support meetings, boost membership and for strategic planning purposes.

Upcoming Development . . .

SouthFair has plans to start construction on, Ethel Parnell Place Apartments II, an eight-plex multi family unit in late summer 2013. This new construction will be nestled in-between Ethel Parnell Place Apartments, which it owns and manages, and Fair Park Estates.

SouthFair's Senior Care Program

The Senior Care Program is still going strong. The Seniors got a special treat this month. They had the opportunity to see the play "Sister Act" at Fair Park Music Hall. The Seniors also enjoyed lunch in the Music Hall's dining room.

  Senior Outing Sister Act Play

Alliance Data has repeated their generous donation for 2013 of $5,000 towards SouthFair's senior program, supporting the mortgage readiness efforts of the Fair Park Estates residents and other community engagement activities. Thanks Alliance Data!
