Partner Spotlight:  Federated Group
www.FedGroup.com

Food is a business, but to us it's personal

Federated Group is a premier sales and marketing company in the grocery, foodservice, drug and convenience store business. Working with retailers, distributors, wholesalers and manufacturers, our ultimate goal is to provide a wide range of solutions to drive growth and tangible results for our customers' private label and foodservice programs.

Federated began in the early 1900's when an entrepreneur named Smith Michael Flickinger opened the first Red & White branded grocery store in Buffalo, New York. Flickinger continued to expand Red & White stores across the country and in 1943 the Voluntary Group System was born to serve the growing needs of independent grocers and wholesalers. In 1968, we changed our name to Federated Group.

Since our inception, we've been helping to grow the food business by delivering sensible solutions to our customers, members and suppliers that are easy to execute and grow revenues and profits in multiple channels. Federated is unique in the industry due to our deep expertise in grocery and foodservice sales, private brands, sourcing, Q&A, supply chain, branding and marketing.

Over the course of our journey, Federated has evolved to meet the changing needs of the marketplace. As a result, we are proud to offer a rich portfolio of solutions to foster food business growth. Our sister companies include, Golden Bay and SailPointe Creative & Marketing. We are also the owners of four highly successful private label brands: Better Valu, HyTop, Parade, and Red & White.  Read more

Committee Spotlight:  Coming Soon - WISE Resource Center (WRC)

As part of our ongoing commitment to provide members with professional development tools to advance diverse leadership in the store brands industry, WISE will launch the WRC (WISE Resource Center) in August.

The WRC is a comprehensive, members-only site providing information and resources to help you increase your professional knowledge, skills and capabilities. Documents, videos and research covering thirteen subject categories will be offered on the site. Whether your interest is to acquire and develop new skills and competencies or to improve existing ones, the WRC is designed to give you the resources you need to achieve your goals.

The following is a list of the subject categories included in the WRC:

Branding                                   Mentoring

Career Development                   Negotiation

Change Management                 Networking

Communication                         Private Brands Industry

Diversity                                   Risk Taking / Risk Management

Leadership                               Strategic Thinking / Planning

Marketing / Advertising

Each of the WRC subject categories will be populated with resources in a variety of educational formats such as articles, books, case studies, presentations, videos and white papers. The site is designed so that members can easily review and download their preferred resources at any time for their use.

We encourage you to actively participate in the WRC. This will enhance your user experience and help us continuously improve the overall quality of the WRC.   In addition to searching and reviewing the current content on the site, you will also be able to engage in other activities in the WRC, such as:

  • Rate the content you read - Your opinion matters.  You can help improve the popularity of a specific resource by rating or liking it. The more people view and like a piece of content, the more popular it becomes.  An item's popularity will determine whether a piece of content remains posted in the WRC long-term.
  • Share content with others using WRC Social Sharing - Sharing content is a great way to help us spread the word on meaningful and relevant material.   Sharing also encourages others to contribute their own responses to the material.
  • Provide feedback to WISE - Let us know your thoughts, comments, suggestions, and recommendations on the site and materials. The more feedback we can collect, the more transparent and engaging our WRC will be for our members.
  • Recommend content for the site - Once the site is launched, we will provide instructions for you to submit information that you have collected and believe would be useful to include in the WRC.

We look forward to introducing you to the WRC very soon. Look for an announcement with additional information about this new resource in your upcoming WISE communication.  Download article

WISE Webinar Recap

How to Read a Person Like a Book:  Understanding Behavioral Diversity

More than 130 people joined the June 4, 2015 webinar presented by Dr. Tony Alessandra, CEO of Assessments 24x7 LLC. The session opened with an overview of the Platinum Rule, "Do unto others as they would have you do unto them." Dr. Alessandra stated that personality conflicts frequently occur due to not being able to connect with another person and perhaps not understanding why. This "connectedness" can be improved by following the Platinum Rule.

The Golden Rule ('Do unto others as you would have them do unto you') can backfire when it comes to diversity as we are all different and sometimes we unknowingly rub people the wrong way because of our cultural or regional backgrounds. Dr. Alessandra discussed how to use knowledge of behavioral styles in order to understand how to implement the Platinum Rule: Talk to people the way they need to be spoken to. Treat them as they need to be treated.

Dr. Alessandra then shared four primary behavioral styles and asked the participants to score themselves:

  1. Guarded: Play cards close to the vest - feelings are not shared
  2. Open: Readily and willingly share feelings and thoughts (perhaps too much at times!)
  3. Indirect: Slower paced, less assertive, ask more than tell, cautious with taking risks, follow rules by letter of law
  4. Direct: Faster paced, more assertive, tell more than ask, less cautious with taking risks, follow rules by spirit of law
The results of the polling showed that most people are a combination of all four behavioral styles, with dominant tendencies toward one.
