Announcement: Senior Operating Officer
We are very pleased to share with you that Christine Westerlund has accepted the position of Senior Operating Officer (SOO), Stollery Children's Hospital. As Acting SOO, Christine has been very supportive of the Family Centred Care Network at the Stollery and regularly attends the Family Centred Care Council meetings.

Christine has served as the Acting SOO for the Stollery since November 2015 and is the successful candidate for the position following a national search.

Christine has worked in a number of nursing and leadership roles in community health in Edmonton for 15-years and at the Stollery Children's Hospital for the past five years.  Her roles at the Stollery Children's Hospital have included Site Director with critical care teams in NICU and PICU, as well as Operative Services/Surgical Programs.

Christine holds a Bachelor of Nursing and Masters of Science (Health Promotion) degrees from the University of Alberta.  She has completed the AHS Executive Education program and has maintained a focus on children's health and patient-centred care throughout her career.

Under Christine's leadership we are excited to continue advancing patient and family centred care at the Stollery Children's Hospital.
Sleepers for babies in NICU
As a father of a former patient,  previoust co-chair of NICU FACT and a teacher at W.P. Wagner High School, Allan MacDairmid has been able to develop community initiatives in support of patients and families at the Stollery.  The first project was a Baby Milestones Calendar with achievement stickers designed by students at W.P. Wagner High School.  Most recently his family's journey in the NICU led Allan MacDairmid to ask fashion students at W. P. Wagner High School to alter sleepers that could be donated back to the Stollery for babies in the NICU.

Allan, his son Frazer and the rest of the family were recently featured on CTV Your Health talking about the project to alter sleepers for babies in the NICU.

If you are interested in donating a new sleeper for this project please bring them to the Family Room 4H2.02 in the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Expanded WiFi Access
We are very excited to announce that wireless internet is now available on 5G4! Now patients, families and guests on the 5G4 medicine unit will enjoy the same access to wireless internet as other areas of the Stollery Children's Hospital.

This offers new ways to stay connected to friends and family, keep up to date on school work and options for entertainment.  If you are unsure of how to access free wifi at the hospital this handy link will walk you through the process.
2016 National Nursing Hero Award Winner
We would like to congratulate Kathy Reid, a nurse practitioner with Pediatric Chronic Pain Services at the Stollery and Hospital News 2016 national Nursing Hero award winner.

Kathy was nominated for this award by Sarah Kane-Poitras, Patient Care Manager for Stollery Ambulatory Programs. Kathy's practice looks at the entire patient and their family and is designed to put their needs at the centre of care. Recognizing that students with chronic pain often struggle to accumulate sufficient high school credits to graduate with their classmates, through innovation and collaboration with Alberta Eduction, Kathy's 10-week pain management program is recognized as three credits at the  grade 12 level.

Congratulations to Kathy for being an innovative pediatric chronic pain crusader and a nursing hero to her patients, their families, and her colleagues.Read more about Kathy's patient and family centred care journey and more of the innovative ways she provides care at the Stollery.

Clarice Chodak Student Achievement Award in Social Action
On June 7th, our own Amanda McLellan was awarded with the Clarice Chodak Student Achievement Award in Social Action.

The Clarice Chodak Student Achievement Award in Social Action is given annually to students in Social Work at the University of Calgary who demonstrate a commitment to social justice, civic engagement, and volunteerism through actions against racism, anti-Semitism or other forms of injustice.

Amanda was nominated for this award for her contribution to research investigating culturally appropriate outcomes for Indigenous child welfare.  Amanda is hopeful that her work will improve service delivery and government policy impacting Indigenous children and their families.

We are very lucky to have Amanda helping to coordinate the Youth Council, peer support and transition from youth to adult care.

Comfort Holds
Members from the Pediatric Pain Committee lead by the wonderful Lois Wolgemuth, Manager of Child Life have developed this poster to educate families on different comfort holds. Families can use these strategies to help comfort their children and teens during difficult procedures.

A growing body of evidence is showing that some of our current practices such as holding children down during procedures can have long lasting negative impacts on their mental health.

The poster aims to educate and support staff, parents and children to develop strategies and partnerships for better outcomes. These comfort positions offer ways to engage caregivers to support with gentle supports and distraction while safety is maintained.
