Aboriginal Child Health

In the November 2015 issue of the Primer we introduced you to the new Aboriginal Child Health Nurse Coordinator,Sherri Di Lallo. What has she been up to since she joined our team?

Supporting Patients and Families
One of Sherri's top priorities is supporting patients and families return to their community from hospital. To help facilitate this she has developed a resource for staff and physicians outlining information about rural and remote communities. These folders include maps, distances to communities, schedule of doctors going to communities and their phone numbers as well as community resources and contact numbers.   These packages have been distributed to Inpatient Units and other staff and physicians engaged in discharge planning

From January to May, Sherri supported 33 patients and families from Aboriginal communities. Of those 33 patients,  28 were inpatients and 5 were outpatients. For the 33 patients and families Sherri conducted  4 assessments, 19 assessments/interventions, 3 consults and 7 assessments/consults/interventions.

Conferences and Events
Sherri also attended the Aboriginal Nurses Association Conference February 15-18.  She came back with new ideas on how to authentically engage with Aboriginal children, families and communities which is vital to improving health outcomes. She was able to bring new ideas and share her knowledge on how the Stollery Children's Hospital can better understand the underlying indigenous philosophies and concepts that feed and nourish Aboriginal good health.

Sherri presented a poster highlighting her work at the Stollery Family Centred Care Council open house on April 22.

Sherri has been instrumental in helping to plan a Traditional Drumming Ceremony on March 23, 2016. Throughout the afternoon over 107 people attended the event. As a part of tradition bannock and stew were served to the Drummers and Elders. Bannock, cheese/meat trays, fruit trays and refreshments were served to the public.

Sherri would like to acknowledge Family Centered Care, the Social Work Program, Spiritual Care and the Aboriginal Health Program for their contributions to this successful and needed event. One way to introduce culture into the hospital setting is through engagement. Some Aboriginal families have indicated that their communities do not practice traditional spiritual healing ceremonies so the Drumming Ceremony at the Stollery is one place to learn about their own traditions and help them in their healing process

Interested in attending a future Traditional Drumming Ceremony? Events are also planned for:
June 29 2016 1-3 PM
September 22 2016 1-3 PM
December 22 2016 1-3 PM
All events are held in the foyer of the Bernard Snell Hall (main floor next to the 112 St entrance)

Clearly Sherri has been hard at work.  Did we mention she works part-time  Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays?  If you have a question for Sherri or know of a family that could use her support please contact her.

NEW: Cardiac FACT
The Cardiac FACT (Family Advisory Care Team) is up and running and have already had their 2nd meeting.  There were 31 people that attended the first meeting including family, a previous patients, physicians and staff.  Rounding out their second meeting the team has already identified some priority initiatives for 2016-2017
Some of the priorities are:
  • Postpartum care for mothers
  • Consistent Social Work support for families
  • Mentorship program for young heart disease adults to mentor current patients
  • Improved mental health support for families, patients and staff
  • Better chairs in PICU
  • Parking concerns
  • Preop programs for families
  • Sibling support
  • Bereavement support
  • Communication book
An ambitious list of priorities for an ambitious group.  The team is now reviewing the ideas and prioritizing actions that the group will focus on.

"I was drawn to Cardic FACT as I was hearing feedback from multiple parents and co-workers about how they would like a way to b
e a part of implementing improvements at the bedside and I myself saw opportunities for improvement. I hope that there will be direct impact on the experience of families at the bedside through the work we hope to do with this advisory council.  So far I have learned we have a diverse group that I think will truly represent the larger population we hope to impact.  I hope other families will hear about the council and want to join or provide feedback."
Leanne Meakins, Nurse Practitioner for Pediatric Cardiac Sciences and a Co-Chair of Cardiac FACT

"I was drawn to the idea of a Cardiac FACT by the success I saw in the NICU FACT. I thought it would be wonderful to see the same type of engagement and results-based focus in a group for the Cardiology team. It is my hope that we can create a group that can forward the agenda of Family Centred Care in a way that bridges understanding between staff and families at the hospital and beyond. To this point I am blown away by the response to the new group. The engagement levels are already so high. It is very exciting."~ Roberta Davis, Family Representative and Co-Chair of Cardiac FACT

Board names Dr. Verna Yiu as AHS President and CEO

Dear staff, physicians and volunteers,

Today I'm pleased to announce Dr. Verna Yiu as the new President and CEO of Alberta Health Services, effective June 3, 2016.

Dr. Yiu has been with AHS for almost four years and, since January, she has led the organization as Interim President and CEO. During that time, it became clear to the Board that Dr. Yiu is the right leader for AHS.

The board's search for a new CEO attracted more than 70 highly qualified applicants from across the country and around the world. Dr. Yiu was the unanimous choice.

Her experience, leadership and personal skills have helped AHS mobilize an effective, provincewide response to the Fort McMurray wildfire while keeping other important work moving forward, including the development of the AHS 2016-17 Health Plan and Business Plan, the finalization of a new vision for the organization, and a refresh of our organizational values. She has also helped AHS strengthen relationships with government, our external partners, including our labour groups, and our own workforce.
Dr. Yiu has earned the respect and trust of the Board, and is an outstanding leader and ambassador for the organization. She cares about quality and safety, and most of all, she cares about people. She embodies the qualities Albertans want in their health system.

Her appointment provides the organization with continued stability and continuity. Together, with all of you, AHS can focus on efforts to improve patient outcomes, patient safety and patient experiences. To read the news release on Dr. Yiu's appointment as well as a detailed biography, please visit the AHS website .

I know Dr. Yiu appreciates the support and encouragement you have given her over the past five months. (You can hear her thoughts on today's announcement in her latest vlog post.) Likewise, the AHS Board appreciates Dr. Yiu's leadership during a time of transition, and is pleased she will continue as our President and CEO.

I would like to thank all of you at AHS for your ongoing contributions to the organization. This is a good day for Alberta Health Services. I am sure you will join the AHS Board in wishing Dr. Yiu all the best.

Sincerely,

Linda Hughes
