"Thank you for taking the time to understand me more." Quote from Conner
A dog in the operating room? When Conner and his family were preparing for a recent procedure at the Stollery, they filled out a form letting the staff know about Conner and his needs. They indicated that Conner had a service dog.
An amazing team of people came together to find a way to ensure should Conner need support recovering from surgery - his dog Tulsa would be there. A special thank you was arranged for everyone who came together to make this Stollery Family Centred Care moment happen.
This team is to be congratulated for the many steps they have taken to better support children and youth with health related sensory issues:
- The training they have made available to staff regarding autism and sensory disorders
- The formation of a photo story binder that helps children, youth and their families to prepare for and understand what steps there are in their surgical journey
- The creation of the form and specific question to better understand how a child may need help and support in the preparation and recovery from their surgery.
Not only have they reached out to prepare and support Conner, they have changed practices to better support many children, youth and their families.
We'd love to hear your Family Centred Care moments! Families, patients, staff or physicians if you have a Family Centred Care story to share - we would LOVE to hear it and share it. Contact Michelle 780-407-2768 or michelle.childs@ahs.ca |
