Scrapbook day, building memories and support
In the November issue of the Primer we heard from Sarah about the wonderful experience she and Christie had at the CAPHC conference in Quebec City.
Sarah and Christie
They haven't been back long and are already formulating new ways to provide peer support at the Stollery!  While at the conference in October the idea was formed to create a scrapbook day for parents with children in the NICU at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

Having a child in the NICU can be a very emotionally trying time.  It can feel isolating, stressful and finding time to do something "normal" during this chaotic time can be near impossible.

Sarah, one of our amazing peer support volunteers, put the call out for donations in her community for unused scrapbook supplies.  She had an overwhelming response and the first scrapbook day was held December 16th in the Bear Den. Six moms came to the trial scrapbook day and their feedback was that it was a success and that they would definitely come again.

Scrapbooking allows parents to celebrate the special moments in their child's life and by bringing parents together it is a natural time to share their experiences of life in the NICU.

In November Sarah attended a Parent Group, that focused on celebrating your baby and their birth story. Some parents find it difficult to celebrate the birth of their baby when it is surrounded by stress and anxiety of life in the NICU.

As Sarah, who has first hand knowledge of how stressful it is to have a child in the NICU, said, "The moms loved it and I was very emotional watching them.  It was a little bit of relaxation and normalcy into their chaotic lives. They were able to just have an hour or two of fun and celebrate their babies!"

We are always needing new peer support volunteers, if this sounds like something that interests you please contact Christie or apply online. Training and support is provided for these very important volunteer positions. The next peer support training date will be Feb 2 & 4 from 5-9 pm at the Stollery Children's Hospital, Walter MacKenzie site. Supper will be served and parking covered.
New Features of the Primer
Regular Primer readers will notice that the look and layout of the Primer has changed in the past few months.  We have updated the layout to improve readability on portable communications devices. We have also added social sharing to the top of each email.  If you think someone in your social network would be interested in the work we are doing through the Stollery Family Centred Care Network, please share the Primer with them by clicking on the social share buttons at the top of this email.

As always there is a forward this email option at the bottom of the email as well.  If you know someone you think would like one of the articles in the Primer or would be interested in joining the Family Centred Care Network you can always forward the email directly to them.
