We Want Your Feedback - Boarder Rooms
As part of the planning and design phase of the Critical Care Redevelopment we are interested in your feedback concerning the furniture in the boarder rooms.

Currently the boarder rooms contain a pull out couch with a bottom bed however, we would like to know if families would instead prefer to have a full mattress/bed in these spaces?

The pull out couch is much more versatile as it allows for both sitting and sleeping but the mattress would provide a more comfortable set-up for sleeping.

Please send your comments via email to Heather McCrady before September 9th
Survey Results

Some of our Network members participated in the Family and Patient Advisor Survey distributed in June. The survey was investigating how best to facilitate connections between the many patient and family advisors working throughout Alberta Health Services. There was an excellent response rate and some of the key results are highlighted below:

  • The vast majority of respondents (95%) saw value in having a way to connect with other patient and family advisors
  • The most valuable benefit of having a way to connect was identified as 'opportunities for discussion of ideas, concerns or issues related to the advisor role'
  • 90% of respondents would want the chosen connection method to be open to both advisors and AHS staff

The results of this survey will be used to guide the establishment of a communication network for patient advisors.

Thank you to those who participated!

AHS Patient First Strategy Released

The month of June saw the release of the Alberta Health Services' Patient First Strategy. The Patient First Strategy was developed in response to the results of consultations with Albertans and outlines an action plan to ensure patient and family centred care is at the forefront of healthcare services and delivery in the province.

The report lists four priority actions:

  • Promote respect
  • Enhance communications
  • Support a team-based approach to care
  • Improve transitions in care

Network Voice- Ambulatory Quality Council

Thank you to everyone who provided their input by filling out the Stollery Ambulatory Survey.  The survey was sent to Network Members who have identified that they have experience in one or more of the Stollery Ambulatory Clinics.  The results have been tabulated and shared with the Ambulatory Quality Council to help provide patient and family focused direction to the focus of this council. Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey and provided their voice to this important quality improvement initiative.

Recognizing our Champions!
This month we awarded Kevin George, Nicole Lyste, Valerie Levesque and Shannon Robertson with our prestigious Family Centred Care (FCC) Champion Pin. This award recognizes network members who have demonstrated exceptional service to the FCC Council, have incorporated the principles of FCC in their own practice or have made a significant impact to the development and facilitation of Family Centred Care initiatives in the city. We would like to thank these volunteers for their continued leadership, dedication and support!

Kevin George receives his FCC Champion pin from Heather McCrady the manager of Family Centered Care

Kevin has been an active member of the NICU Family Advisory Care Team (FACT) since 2013 and was a representative on the Regional NICU Operations Committee. He has had significant involvement in the planning and design of the new Stollery Critical Care units at the Walter Mackenzie Centre as well as, taking part in the Neonatal Palliative Care Family focus group and sitting on the planning committee for the upcoming Regional NICU Visioning Day in November. His skill in addressing broad organizational practices and bringing his family's experience to these discussions has influenced decisions in how infants and children are being cared for at the Stollery.
Valerie Levesque and Nicole Lyste show off their FCC Champion Pins

Nicole has been involved in furthering Family Centred Care since 2013 and is currently the Co-Chair of the NICU Family Advisory Care Team (FACT). She has shared her family story at new staff orientations, provided input on newborn care by participating in the NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program) Family Audit and been a family representative on an interview panel for the recruitment of a new Unit Manager. She is the Family Lead on the Leadership Team for a new peer support and quality improvement initiative at the Stollery inpatient medical unit -that is part of a Canadian Foundation for Health Improvement collaborative. As part of this project, she is also a Family Mentor visiting inpatient families on 5G4. Her tireless work promoting family centered care practices has made a difference in the way staff provide care to infants and in how they engage families in their child's care.

Valerie has been involved with Family Centred Care Network and the NICU Family Advisory Care Team (FACT) since June 2013.  Using her skills as an amazing collaborator who is always willing to go-the-extra-mile, Valerie has been involved in projects such as developing transfer sheets and parent tool kits to use when a baby will be transferred to another hospital. Valerie's career as part of the transport team is vital on NICU FACT as she knows first-hand some of the challenges families and staff encounter.  Valerie is great at representing families and is a valuable staff member with a wealth of knowledge.

Shannon Robertson poses with her new FCC Champion Pin and FCC Manager Heather McCrady

Shannon began working with the Family Centred Care Network in 2010 and has had significant involvement in the development of policies and procedures, patient safety and in the planning and development of the new OR and Dayward at the Stollery Children's Hospital. She is a compelling communicator; able to speak from her own family's experience and integrate the perspective of others into conversations surrounding family centred care. Her expertise and skill with communication has benefited many policies, the review of educational materials and her involvement on FCC Council.

contribution to improving medical education and patient care.

Who is eligible? Patients with chronic illness and regular contact with the healthcare system who live within a 40 km radius of the University of Alberta.

What will I do? Once every two months, you will visit with students in your home to talk about your experiences as a patient. Once per year, the students will accompany you to a medical appointment.

FCC Farm Fun!

On June 27th the Family Centred Care Network held its annual summer barbeque at the Prairie Gardens & Adventure Farm located just outside of Edmonton in the town of Bon Accord. It was an afternoon full of food, family and fun! It was a great opportunity to get to know one another and their children outside of the Stollery setting.

For those of you unable to join us, we want to pass on our sincere thanks for the many hours of volunteer time and willingness to work collaboratively on the many initiatives that have been a priority of the Family Centred Care Council and the NICU Family Advisory Council this year.

Here are a few photos from the event:

Critical Care Redevelopment Project

We are nearing the final stages of the planning and design phase of the Critical Care Redevelopment Project at the University of Alberta Hospital. Planning for the redevelopment of the PICU and NICU at the Walter Mackenzie Centre and PCICU in the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute began in the fall of 2013. Family Centred Care network members Kevin George, Karen Calhoun and Ali Martens continue to attend meetings for the redevelopment project in order to ensure that the viewpoints of pediatric patient's families are represented and incorporated.

Kevin and Karen participated in the PCICU patient room "mockups" and were able to provide valuable input on the design of patient rooms that accommodate the needs of both staff and families. During her time in Edmonton, Ali gave insight into the interior design of the spaces and preliminary interior finish concepts. We would like to thank these volunteers for their time and for being such strong advocates for Family Centred Care in the hospital!

We will be sure to keep you updated with additional information about the redevelopment project as it becomes available!
