MEMBERSHIP CORNER - Jasmine Rosentreter
Social Worker, Family Centred Care Team

What brought you to the Family Centred Care Team?

I thoroughly enjoy working with parents and families in the hospital.  To be a part of the Family Centred Care Team allows me to work with families from a different perspective!

What is one thing that you would like network members to know about you?

I am eager to work with everyone on the Team and Council! Also I am a bit competitive - I did competitive swimming for 13 years.

What is something that the FCCC has done (past or present) that you are most excited about?

As a social worker throughout the hospital, I found the whiteboards to be so nice for both families and staff.  It creates a nice way that all staff and families can communicate - and to remember names since there are always so many names to remember!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:
Family Bedside Orientations
"I don't feel so alone. It helps to know that other families have felt the same way." - 5G4 parent after a visit from a Family Mentor

In the five weeks since Family Mentors have begun visiting inpatient families on 5G4, 21 visits have occurred and the response has been very positive.  Families have indicated that the practical information provided to them including parking information and use of the whiteboards as a two-way communication tool has made their hospital stay a bit easier. As well, families have taken comfort in knowing that other families have experienced many of the same feelings and emotions as their own and have indicated feeling validated in how they have been approaching  their child's care. Some families have requested another visit from a Family Mentor recognizing the benefits they received from their initial visit with a peer family.

5G4 Staff have also started to recognize the value of Family Bedside Orientations and have begun identifying families they feel could benefit from a visit. As one staff commented after a recent Family Mentor "calming one stressed family down through a Family Mentor visit means calming the whole unit down." Not only do visits benefit the family, they benefit the staff and essentially the whole unit.

Volunteer Family Mentors are still needed to ensure that all inpatient families needing a visit are seen. All Family Mentors must complete Peer Support Training prior to meeting with families. If you have completed training and are ready to start as a Family Mentor, contact Christie for more information. If you have not completed training and are interested, contact Christie at the link above or see our January primer for information about our next peer support training in February.

THE DONOR DIFFERENCE:  Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation Video
Every contribution to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation has a life-changing, positive impact on sick and severely injured children and their families.  The Donor Difference, a video recently created by the Foundation highlights the impact donors make.

Take the journey through the Stollery to learn more about how donors help keep this amazing hospital world-class.

A Special Thanks go out to:
The Families from the Family Centred Care (FCC) Council: Jodie Craven, Allan MacDairmid, Alison Martins;
And especially to the Foundation for their continued support of Family Centred Care at the Stollery.

PASSION FOR HEALTH:  NICU Family Advisory Care Team Family Member recognizes a special NICU Nurse:

Passion For Health initiative and their Because You Cared series provide a vehicle for Albertans to say thank you to AHS staff who have made a significant difference in their lives.  The gratitude from patients comes unexpectedly to the AHS health professionals being recognized. Through some covert operations, those unexpected moments are captured through this video series.

This time the Because You Cared video series features a surprise thank you for one special NICU nurse. Sarah Topilko and her family returned to the Royal Alexandra Hospital to thank a neonatal intensive care nurse who provided them extraordinary support four years ago when their first child was born after only 27 weeks gestation.

The AWESOME PROJECT:  an initiative of a caring sister to erase the "R word"
"Not only should we respect people with differences but we should realize how they enlighten everyone."

- Karleen Rutter

The Awesome Project is a campaign aiming to bring to light the damaging consequences of using the word "retarded".
Fifteen-year-old Karleen Rutter, first presented her movement to her junior high school leadership conference, and with the assistance of Qi Creative,  created an inspiring video utilizing Karleen's family's story as an example of how one can "embrace and learn from diversity".

In this video Karleen shares the story of her 12 year old brother Jed and with her family's journey inspires a movement to abolish the "r-word", and begin to see the awesome in everyone.

Click here to view the video and read her speech

Karlene and her family are active members of the Stollery Family Centred Care Network, having presented their story in numerous venues.  Congratulations Karlene on this awesome project!

FAMILY TALKS ROUNDUP

PICU Nurses Orientation

On December 3rd, Karen Klak and Delona Baldwin presented their families' stories to 12 new PICU nurses. Some great learning was done around how to support families and remain family centred in their work as nurses in an intensive care environment.

SNELP (Stollery Nursing Entry Level Program)

Family Centred Care Council members Amanda Proctor and Anne-Marie Paquin, teamed up with a Clinical Nurse Educator, the Stollery Chaplain and a child life representative to share their experiences around Family Centred Care to 10 nurses new to the Stollery inpatient units.

Thank you all for sharing your personal stories.  As always, these experiences continue to have a great impact on the staff joining the Stollery.
