MEMBERSHIP CORNER
Each month, we will introduce you to members of the Family Centred Care Council and NICU Family Advisory Care Team.  This month we feature two of our newest family members to the NICU Family Advisory Care Team, Jennifer Hanrahan & Sarah Topilko.
MEMBERSHIP CORNER - TRISTAN PIDNER
Family Centred Care Council Member, and Previous Stollery Patient!

What brought you to the Family Centred Care Council?

I came to the council through a desire to turn my experiences in the Stollery into a positive contribution back to the hospital. I was informed of the existence of the council due to a family member's involvement, and have been after a position ever since.

What is one thing that you would like network members to know about you?

I would like other network members to know that I am committed to using my hospital experiences to foster positive experiences in similar situations.

What is something that the FCCC has done (past or present) that you are most excited about?

I am most excited about the work that the council is currently involved in to help facilitate smoother transitions within the hospital. I am involved in this, and it is also personally relevant as I have just gone through the transition process from pediatric to adult care myself.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER - Erin Cripps-Woods
Family Centred Care Council Member, and Sibling of previous Stollery patient

What brought you to the Family Centred Care Council?

I was brought to the council initially by my mother as a presenter for the speaker series conducted by council. I decided to pursue being a council member because I have seen the amazing work the council does firsthand and I wanted to be part of the efforts to improve hospital life for families.

What is one thing that you would like network members to know about you?

I'm always on the go with either work, volunteering, sports, friends or family and I try my hardest to balance everything but no one is perfect and that is the one thing I always need to remind myself.

What is something that the FCCC has done (past or present) that you are most excited about?

I was very excited about the speaker series that the FCC facilitated last year. Presently, I am excited about the Bedside Orientation aspect of helping families navigate the landscape of the hospital upon their arrival to the Stollery.

FALL FAMILY CENTRED CARE NETWORK BARBEQUE

Families and staff gathered on September 28th to celebrate this past year's accomplishments of the Family Centred Care Network at our Annual Barbecue!  While we did have a magician to share in some fun, it has been the magic of relationships and the commitment of many that has made this last year a success!

We celebrated some of our amazing Family Centred Care Champions, those who have contributed to furthering the culture of family centred care at the Stollery in a significant way over a period of more than two years:
  • Sue Robins, Family member and one of the founders of the FCC Network
  • Katharina Staubb, Family member and one of the original NICU Family Advisory Care Team Members
  • Simone Chalifoux, Family member on FCC Council
  • Andrew Hendricks, Previous Patient. member on FCC Council
  • Lynett Kane, Social Work Supervisor, staff member on FCC Council
  • Dee-Ann Schwanke, Family member and previous co-chair of FCC Council
It is exciting to welcome new members, their ideas and experiences, and celebrate the commitment of the many people  who are committed to this journey of  embedding family centred care in a collaborative, continuous and consistent manner throughout the Stollery.
SAYING GOODBYE TO MARNI PANAS:
Family Centred Care Coordinator

Many of us have had the opportunity to wish Marni Panas well in her new role with Quality Improvement - Clinical Engagement team as the Coordinator to the Alberta Clinician Council.

Marni has made a significant contribution to patient and family centred care at the Stollery in her position as Family Centred Care Coordinator, and previously as co-chair of the Family Centred Care Council and member of the NICU Family Advisory Care Team.  Not only has she made a significant contribution as a parent and a staff at the Stollery, she has shared her family's experience and the Stollery Family Centred Care Journey nationally and internationally.

I know she will be truly missed by all of us, families and staff!

Marni, we are grateful for your passion, commitment and the many ways you have contributed to improving the care of children and their families at the Stollery!

FAMILY TALKS ROUNDUP

SNELP (Pediatric Nurse's Orientation)

Family member Christie Oswald & previous patient Tristan Pidner spent Monday, September 15 role playing many scenarios with new pediatric nurses.  They brought both the perspective of parents and patients to this engaging morning.

NICU Nursing Staff Orientation

Family member and NICU FACT family member, Sarah Topilko, and Marni Panas shared their experiences as a family in the NICU to a large group of 22 new nursing staff!  Even though the group was large, there was still lots of great discussion.

UofA Interprofessional Student Learning

A number of family members from the FCC Network - Kristy Wolfe, Sophie Kienlen, and Tiffany Keiller - shared their stories at a Launch with 600+ students at the UofA Interprofessional Student Learning Orientation.  Not surprizingly, student satisfaction surveys show the patient/parent stations were the most popular component of the event. Many students made specific comments about their learning and how they will work with patients and their families in the future.

An hour long interaction is planned for January as part of a required course for healthcare professionals.
