MEMBERSHIP CORNER - JENNIFER HANRAHAN
|
| NICU FACT Family Member, Jennifer Hanrahan, and daughter, Amelia! |
What brought you to NICU FACT?
What brought you to FACT? Our daughter Amelia was born at 24+5 weeks on Valentine's Day, 2013. For the first few days we struggled with trying to stay out of the way and allow the medical teams to do what they needed to do for our daughter. We felt helpless and removed from the experience of having our first baby. On our way to leave for a coffee when rounds began one morning, a nurse ushered us back to the bedside, introduced us to the team and changed our lives and the course of our stay. We became aware of Family Centred Care and everything changed. We were educated, informed and present. It took away a lot of the fear for us. I wanted to join the network and FACT to help to support other families who are facing crisis.
What is one thing that you would like network members to know about you?
What is one thing that you would like network members to know about you? I am passionate about children and the role that they play in the future of our society. I am proud to work for an organization that fosters confidence, creativity, leadership and environmentalism in youth. I LOVE MY JOB!
What is something that FACT has done (past or present) that you are most excited about?
What is something that FACT Council has done (past or present) that you are most excited about? During our stay at the RAH NICU, I was fortunate to participate in the parents entrance renovation and thanking the students who donated the artwork. The transformation was fabulous! It meant a lot to us to see efforts being made to make families more comfortable and the space brighter and more welcoming.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER - SARAH TOPILKO
|
 | NICU FACT Family Member, Sarah Topilko |
What brought you to NICU FACT? After spending time in the NICU with our oldest son, Connor, I inquired about volunteering and doing something to 'give back' in some way. I was introduced to FACT through conversations with Marni and Heather, after joining the Family Centered Care Network and reading the monthly primer emails as well. It sounded so interesting to me and something I would love to be apart of, so I expressed interest to both parties and was very excited when a few spots opened up! What is one thing that you would like network members to know about you? My husband Trevor and I are parents to two wonderful boys, Connor and Bentley and I do photography as a part time career when I'm not chasing the kiddos! What is something that FACT has done (past or present) that you are most excited about? I think the remodeling / expansion projects at both the David Schiffe and now the upcoming Royal Alexandra site are most exciting to me, as that is the space we, as parents, have spent such a substantial amount of time in. I look forward to the new features that future parents can benefit from.

MINIMIZING THE OUCH FROM NEEDLE POKES
|
 | | One of 5 Posters Encouraging the Use of Numbing Cream |
The Pediatric Pain Committee continues to create new ways to help parents advocate for the best possible care for their children. This summer, the committee developed a poster to support the use of Maxilene, which is a cream that is applied to the skin prior to any needle, and numbs the pain of the needle. These great posters are now at the beside (by the white boards) at each inpatient bed, as well as in the Emergency Room, and the PreAdmmission Unit. We have 5 different versions featuring 5 great children. Feedback from parents and staff has been positive. They appreciate the opportunity to advocate for their child, and many of the kids tell us how much the numbing cream helps!
Our Pain Committee is working on many different projects to improve pain assessment and management for all the children and families here at Stollery. We are grateful for the continued involvement of parents from the Family Centered Care Network: Rana Biesenthal, Mary Bell, Stacy Grainger-Schatz, and Christine Cripps-Woods for their input on this and many other initiatives.
