A Primer on Family Centred Care
July 2014
Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time. ~ John Lubbock

PCICU TRANSFER STUDY COMPLETE!
|

Just over twelve months ago, the Stollery's Family Centred Care Network Members were asked to take part in an exciting study. The hope of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care (PCICU) Transfer Study is to prove that families who are present and engaged during Transfer Rounds experience less anxiety as they prepare to transfer from the PCICU and after they have left. As part of the study, families were offered the opportunity to have a Family Mentor provide them with Peer Support.
Elina Williams (Research Nurse and Study Coordinator, Pediatric Cardiac Sciences) shared these words:
Dear Supporting Parents,
It is with tremendous gratitude for your contributions that I write to inform you that the Transfer Study is now complete.
Over the past year we screened 360 patients, enrolled 230, and randomized 90 to the intervention arm. We had a total of 15 requests for peer support. We observed that parents tended to request support when it was their first ICU or surgical experience, regrettably a minority experience in our ICU. Although many of our families are "well seasoned" your willingness to come and support a parent in need (often at the drop of a hat) and the quality of the support provided made a tremendous difference in the story these families now have to share with others.
...
To supporting parents who did not have a chance to connect with a family for the purpose of this study, thank you. Thank you for being willing. For doing the training. For being on call. For substantiating and authenticating your own journey, and recognizing the value that holds for other families.
It has been my absolute pleasure in getting to know you and to work alongside you in a research study that truly captures family centered care at its core.
On behalf of the entire Transfer Study team, thank you.
A BIG THANKS to:
Each of the Family Mentors who were involved in this work. The experience that we gained have and will continue to form a great foundation for expanding peer support to other families and for further collaboration with our health care professionals.
To the team of Social Workers in the PCICU and on 4C. Your knowledge, experience and support was invaluable to this experience for me and for our Family Mentors.
And finally, to Dr. Ian Adatia, who initiated this project, and the rest of the Cardiology team for being so thoughtful in your approach to Family Centred Care and including families in such a meaningful way.
We look forward to seeing the published results! Stay tuned!

SUCCESSFUL APPLICATION!
Partnering with Patients and Families for Quality Improvement
|

In May 2014, the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement invited organizations to apply to join a pan-Canadian collaborative focused on building capacity and enhancing organizational culture to partner with patients and families in order to improve quality across the healthcare continuum.
We were successful in our application!
The quality improvement initiative we are focusing on is: Family Bedside Orientations
This improvement project aims to:
- Embed a peer support initiative on a Medicine inpatient unit (5G4) to ensure families are aware of available services and staff roles, as well as share opportunities and effective ways for inpatient families to participate in their child's care and care team.
- Improve both staff and family practices and communication in regards to hand hygiene, medication reconciliation and education.
- Support family engagement with their child's care team by involving staff and physicians in discussions about the principles of patient and family centred care and how to embed these principles in daily practices through empowering inpatient families to participate in rounds and ongoing communication with unit staff - increasing level of family engagement at medical rounds, and the use of bedside whiteboards.
This is a big initiative involving:
- Family members of our FCC Network who have trained to be Family Mentors,
- The Staff on 5G4 (Managers, Nurses, Social Workers, & Child Life staff)
- Physicians (Hospitalists and Community Preceptors), Medical students & Junior Residents
- An Evaluation Specialist, from AHS Research Innovation and Analytics
- And Family Centred Care Staff
Stay Tuned for further updates! This project will begin this Fall.

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITY: PARENTS OF PREEMIES FOCUS GROUP
|
An important opportunity to make a difference in the future for children and families following discharge from hospital:
Participants (parents of infants born preterm, <38 weeks gestation) are needed for focus group interviews discussing parent support following discharge home from the hospital.
Parents with children born prematurely can have a challenging time during the transition from the high intensity hospital environment to the more isolated home environment.
We are recruiting families to fill out a brief questionnaire and share their experiences and opinions with us in order to help us understand more about what type of direct parental support would be most helpful in this transition period.
If eligible for the study, you will be required to attend one 2 hour focus group session in Edmonton with other parents of preterm infants.
This study is being conducted by the Northern Alberta Neonatal Program and has received approval from the University of Alberta Research Ethics Board (Pro00044432).
To find out more about the study and your eligibility to participate please contact:

The Stollery NICU FACT project, Baby Milestones, which allow parents to celebrate and remember key moments in their child's journey, have inspired similar projects in other pediatric health centres!
Since sharing the success of the "Milestones" project, we have fielded inquiries from the Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge, AB, the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary, AB and as far away as the Sydney Southwest Are Health Service in Sydney, Australia! They have all recognized the wonderful talent of the W. P. Wagner High School Students and the great work by the Stollery NICU FACT. We are always happy to assist our colleagues in other health centres across the globe!
