What brought you to FACT?

Our daughter (Maddie) had a series of unfortunate events which required us to spend time in NICU during 2012. Subsequent to the time spent at NICU we felt an overwhelming desire to give back to the Stollery and in particular to try and utilize our experiences to help and support families. We conducted research to determine how we could give back and came across FACT and started the process to become members. Since joining it has been very rewarding and therapeutic to be able to work on various initiatives and with great loving and supportive family members and staff of the Stollery.

What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you?

Maddie's journey was cut short and she passed away in December 2012. Our family is blessed by an unbelievable support system of friends and family and one way we can honor her is to raise money in her name. Since she has passed we have been able to raise over $50,000 in Maddie's name. Our ability to give back in this fashion does bring comfort and happiness and it is truly rewarding. As a family we are a group of 4 with 2 boys (Mason and Maxx) and we try to live our lives like tomorrow would be our last. We travel, play, laugh and have fun and live for the moment more times than not. This attitude towards life has always been rewarding even prior to Maddie being born and subsequent to Maddie's passing this has been a philosophy that allows us to focus on the positive things in the world and in our lives.

What is something that FACT has done (past or present) that you are excited about?

It has been quite impressive and surprising how involved and accepted FACT members are by the Stollery staff, practitioners and operational management. The acceptance and desire to obtain families opinions and input into day to day operations and vision for the Stollery has been quite remarkable. One particular series of projects which highlights this is the involvement of families in the redesign of the University site and the enhancements of the current University site. For the redesign there was a large working group consisting of all facets of the hospital, project managers, engineers and the families were also invited to attend. From the very first meeting we were asked to sit "at the table" and during the redesign process families were invited to comment and asked direct questions and for input. As this project unfolds we are honored and excited that we are able to provide input and leave our mark on a long lasting medical mainstay in Northern Canada.

What brought you to the FACT?

Heather (Manager, Family Centred Care) asked and I thought it was a good opportunity to give back and to expand my own understanding of the health system in general

What is the one thing you would like Network members to know about you?

While we are proud of our experiences as parents of a child with a congenital heart defect we are also extremely proud to be parents of three normal (including our heart kid) active and excited young people. We have always seen it as important to not allow our difficulties to define us as a family, but rather to have them add to our experience of our world and our journey.

What is something that Council has done (past or present) that you are excited about?

I think for me the most exciting thing is having a place where staff and parents of patients can come together as equals and discuss issues that impact both their lives and ours. I find it frank and refreshing. It has given me a far greater appreciation for the passion and dedication of the staff at our NICUs.

AHS PATIENT AND FAMILY CENTRED CARE SURVEY

  PFCC Survey

Members of the Knowledge Management team of Alberta Health Services (AHS) met with the Stollery Family Centred Care Council this month to ask, "What does patient and family centred care mean to you?"
This was part of a broad consultation with patients, families, advisory councils, health providers and key stakeholders across the province.  In addition they have reviewed and studied what other organizations are doing across Canada, the US, and internationally.  They have pulled all of this information together and are seeing common themes, desires and expectations for health care experiences.

Now, they want to know if what they've heard and learned is meaningful to you.  Your feedback will be used to inform the AHS Patient and Family Centred Care Strategy. A draft of this strategy will be developed by the end of June, and once formally approved, it will be shared with our teams, our stakeholders and most importantly you - our patients and families.

CASTING CALL: FAMILIES WANTED FOR PHNSP VIDEO!

Movie Night

The Stollery Pediatric Home Nutrition Support Program, in collaboration with the Stollery Family Centred Care Network, are looking for families with g-tube experience to share their stories on a professionally produced video to other families who will soon be going home with a g-tube. This video will also be used to educate health care professionals in caring for these families.

As part of the video, families will be sharing their experiences of day to day life with a child with a g-tube. You do not need prior acting experience!  We are looking for "real" families with real experiences from infant to long term experiences and everything in between.  We are planning to complete shooting footage prior to the end of June, 2014.

The video is being professionally shot, edited and produced thanks to the financial support of Friends of University Hospital Nancy Lieberman Fund and the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHN).

SELF-GUIDED TOUR FOR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES ... WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Staff in the Pre-admission Clinic are wondering if a Self Guided Tour would help patients and families find their way around the hospital.   Families tell us they find it stressful on the day of surgery to come to the Stollery and to be uncertain of where to go.  We also hear how they find places by accident, or at the very end of their hospital visit. But staff aren't sure if this is a good idea, or what format may work best (e.g. Treasure Hunt).

Let us know:

  • If you think this will be a valuable way to help children and their families
  • And if so, what format and important places we need to let the families know about.

SCH FOUNDATION: REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

Foundation LogoThe Stollery Children's Foundation has identified "Family Centred Care" as one of their "Five Pillars of Excellence in Care".  We are very grateful for the Foundation's commitment to creating a culture where families feel welcome - in being active members of the team caring for their child, as well as being meaningfully engaged throughout the operations of the hospital.  The Foundation's support allows us to proudly contribute in making the Stollery Children's Hospital a centre of excellence in pediatric health care.

We are pleased to share a copy of the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation's report to the community.  You are welcome to read it by clicking on the link:

FAMILY TALKS ROUNDUP

PICU Fellows Role Playing

Family member, Tiffany Keiller, joined Dr. Dan Garros and Marni Panas in an engaging session with Fellows and Residents.   The physicians were introduced to Family Centred Care by Tiffany and Marni followed by Dr. Garros leading the group in a discussion about communication skills.  The Academic Half Day concluded with the practising of these skills role playing various scenarios between family and physicians.

New Nurse's Orientation (SNELP)

Family members Poonam Madan and Karen Klak teamed up to present and role play scenarios to new pediatric nurses at their orientation.  The new format continues to be well received by both families and new staff.

"Serve & Return" NIDCAP / Developmental Care Workshop

Foster mom and family member, Cari Mutch, joined Dr. Juzer Tyebkhan (Neonatologist and NIDCAP Trainer in Training) and Dr. Brandene Lorraine (CASA: Child, Adolescent and Family Mental Health) in presenting the value and skills of developmental care to NICU nurses from across Edmonton.  The different perspectives provided for a rich dialogue amongst all participants.

Wee Wonders Workshop (NICU Nurses)

Family member, Jennifer Hanrahan, returned to the very successful "Wee Wonders Workshop" for NICU nurses.  Her presentation "Tiny Treasures in a Big Big World", in which she shared her family's NICU journey, set the perfect tone to a valuable education day for new and experienced nurses alike.

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITY: NEW NURSE'S ORIENTATION RE-DEVELOPMENT

"I really REALLY liked it and wished it was a whole day! ... watching others was very beneficial, I learned a lot from observing ... having actual family members play the roles was helpful and the scenarios were very realistic.  I could relate to them from my own past experiences."

- New Stollery Nurse

We are always looking for more family members (parents, siblings, patients, grandparents, etc.) to participate in new staff orientations & role playing!  If you are interested in taking part in one of these sessions (they occur on Monday mornings), please contact [email protected]

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITY:  REVIEWING POLICIES AND PROCEDURES, SURVEYS, AND FAMILY EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

Frequently we receive documents that staff are requesting families to review or have input in the development.

In this past month families and previous patients participated in:

  • creating a Letter and Poster to respectfully remind patients & families on 5F3 (Outpatient Clinic) of the importance of arriving on time to ensure that all patient appointments can be accommodated.

If you are interested in participating in these types of reviews, please contact:
