MEMBERSHIP CORNER
Each month, we will introduce you to two members of the Family Centred Care Council and NICU Family Advisory Care Team.  This month we feature one of our newest FCC Council Members, Dr. Dawn Davies and we reintroduce you to NICU FACT Member Tara Follet, NICU Nurse Practitioner and FACT Co-Chair.  In last month's edition, we posted someone else's answer to Tara's third question!  So we are reposting Tara's entire response.  Sorry, Tara!

DR. DAWN DAVIES
FCC Council Member,
Dr. Dawn Davies
What brought you to the Council?

Wanting to be involved in family centered care, to learn more about it. Also because I am very concerned about 1) physical spaces (lack of private, homey spaces, especially) and 2) lack of continuity of care for many families at SCH when their children are very sick and have many teams involved.

What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you?

I was a pediatric nurse at Hospital for Sick Children (oncology) before going to med school.

What is something that Council has done (past or present) that you are excited about?

Joint talks with health care professionals and capital projects planning.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER -
TARA FOLLET
NICU Nurse Practitioner, Tara Follet, and husband, Steve.
What brought you to the NICU FACT?

I strongly believe that incorporating families in the care of their children is paramount in the context of quality care.  I thoroughly enjoy working with families and their children and I feel privileged to be part of their journey.  FACT engages this collaboration and I am excited to be part of that.

What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you?

I am a mother of two boys who are young adults, have 2 crazy dogs and have been happily married for 22yrs.   I have worked in the NICU since the early 1990s and in my spare time I enjoy travelling, running (usually after the crazy dogs) and cycling.

What is something that the FACT has done (past or present) that you are excited about?

Although I am new to FACT, I think all the collaborative work that has been done with respect to "getting the FACT word out there" at regional and international conferences, is fantastic.  I am excited to be on the committee, to learn more on how we can work together.

FAMILIES ENGAGED IN CAPITAL PROJECT PLANNING AND DESIGN

Critical Care Design meetingFamily Member Shannon Robertson (centre) attends Operative Services Design meeting with Nhan Pham, Interior Designer; Deb Maerz , AHS Clinical Liaison Major Capital Projects; Carla McNabb, Unit Manager Operative Services.

_______________________________________________

Update on Current Projects:

Operative Services Expansion is now in the final stages of the design, and preparations are being made for construction of Phase1 of the project.  A Big Thanks to Shannon Robertson, a family member of the Family Centred Care Council, who has consistently brought the perspective of families to the planning and design committee since planning began in spring of 2012.  Larger family group meetings have also taken place at two critical points in the planning - at the start of the functional plan with management staff, and in providing input on interior design components with architects and interior designers.

Critical Care Expansion is now awaiting final sign off of the Functional Program Plan.  Family Members Karen Calhoun, Sharon Willey and Kevin George participate in the planning for the three functional components of the project: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  Next steps - Interior and schematic design planning.
INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITY:  PICU FELLOWS COMMUNICATION & ROLE PLAYING

We are looking for one family member to join another family member to take part in a role playing / communication training session with PICU Residents during their Academic Half Day.  The session will be facilitated by Dr. Dan Garros who will lead with a presentation on communication skills then guide the Residents in practicing these skills with families.

STOLLERY PATIENTS & FAMILIES COLLABORATE IN REVIEW OF TRANSITIONS FROM YOUTH TO ADULT CARE

Preparing for adulthood is a challenging time for all teens. Transitioning from pediatric to adult care can be an especially  challenging process involving different healthcare providers, community resources, and changes in who holds the primary responsibility for the teens care.

A team of staff, physicians, previous patients and families are now reviewing what resources, tools and processes are currently in place at the Stollery to support teens and their families in this important stage of their life.

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:  Uof A Medical Student Patient Immersion Program

Patient Immersion

The Faculty of Medicine at the UofA , as part of their

Physicianship course, has introduced a Patient Immersion program to their Undergraduate Medical students.

The Patient Immersion Experience aims to educate medical students about the fundamentals of the clinical practice of medicine and the doctor-patient relationship. Patients or families interested in participating in this longitudinal mentorship program will be matched to pairs of first year medical students who will learn about the illness experience of patients from their and their families' perspective.

If you choose to participate, you would visit with students in your home, or at a convenient and accessible public place that is significant or familiar to you, once every two months, to talk about your experiences as a patient. Once a year, the students would also accompany you to a medical appointment.

The program will begin in September 2014.

FAMILY TALKS ROUNDUP

February was another busy month for families sharing their stories!

PICU New Nurse's Orientation

Family members, Karen Klak and Karen Calhoun, each presented at one of two orientations to welcome new PICU nurses to the Stollery.

Wee Wonders Workshop

Family member, Jennifer Hanrahan, shared her family journey at what has become a very popular education day for NICU nurses!

MacEwan University Nurses

Family member, Shannon Robertson, shared her story and Family Centred Care to nursing students at MacEwan University.

All of these presentations resulted in meaningful conversations and positive evaluations.  Thank you to the family members for sharing your stories and thank you to the Educators and Health Care Professionals for including the important family perspective in the education of staff!

NEW NURSE'S ORIENTATION RE-DEVELOPMENT

You've been hearing for sometime about the great work being done by the Clinical Nurse Educators to redevelop the New Nurses Orientation (SNELP) to be based on cases and role playing.  Families have been very much involved in creating scenarios that allow the new nurse's to learn about Family Centred Care through role playing with families.

On February 10th, two parents, Poonam Madan & Karen Klak, and a patient youth, Tristan Pidner, took part in the first of these monthly sessions.  Playing the role of patients and family members, the entire group was engaged in great conversation about creating a climate for patients and families to feel empowered to be involved in care.  The response from everyone was very positive.

Evaluation from a new nurse:

"I really REALLY liked it and wished it was a whole day! ... watching others was very beneficial, I learned a lot from observing ... having actual family members play the roles was helpful and the scenarios were very realistic.  I could relate to them from my own past experiences"

We have room for many more family members (parents, siblings, patients, grandparents, etc.) to participate.  If you are interested in taking part in one of these sessions (they occur in the mornings of Mondays), please contact
