CELEBRATING FAMILY CENTRED CARE WEEK
Families enjoy cake and conversations with hundreds of staff during Patient & Family Centred Care week 2013.

The Stollery joined Family Centred Care partners across Alberta in celebrating Patient & Family Centred Care Week September 30th to October 3, 2013.

With 15 family members contributing over 100 hours to this past week's events, this made it the largest single event that we have engaged in.  By all accounts, the celebration was a huge success and resulted in many positive conversations about Family Centred Care at the Stollery.

Some of the many highlights include:

  • Over 1,000 pieces were cut from 37 cakes for every unit, clinic, office at every site
  • 700 of these pieces were hand delivered by FCC network members to staff and physicians
  • 15 family members (and some of their children) volunteered over 100 hours to deliver cake, sitting at the display booth and delivering the various presentations
  • The FCC Network engaged in conversations with over 500 different staff and physicians (group and individual) about Family Centred Care at the Stollery (yes, we counted!)
  • Six Dr. Patch Up bears donated by the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation were randomly awarded to visitors to the display booth
  • We received applications from new family members
  • We received numerous requests for information on where to donate to the SCH Foundation
  • We received emails acknowledging the great work of staff from families who found the StolleryFCC email address on the tent cards in the main cafeteria (these comments have been forwarded to the managers in those areas)
  • We received numerous comments from staff who were most appreciative
  • Heather McCrady (Manager, Family Centred Care) & Dee-Ann Schwanke (Co-Chair, Stollery Family Centred Care Council) shared the FCC Survey results during Pediatric Grand Rounds to audiences across Alberta and in Winnipeg
  • Karen Calhoun (FCC Council Family Member), Dr. Chloe Joynt (Neonatologist), Heather Matson-McCrady (Manager, Family Centred Care) took turns with three presenters from the Alberta Children's Hospital in a province wide, joint "Pecha Kucha" style presentation
  • Ali Martens (NICU FACT Family Member), Dr. Chloe Joynt (Neonatologist) & Marcel Panas (Coordinator, Family Centred Care) shared their presentation for the Canadian Association of Pediatric Health Centres Conference during NICU Grand Rounds
This wouldn't have been the success it was without the energy and commitment of all who participated.  Whether you were sitting by the booth, handing out cake, giving presentations, taking part in the Fellows training, your presence WAS the single most important part of all of these activities.
Stollery Family Centred Care teamed up with Alberta Health Services Patient Engagement, to celebrate FCC initiatives and create awareness to staff and the public at the University of Alberta Hospital

Dee-Ann Schwanke (FCC Council Co-Chair & Family Member) teams up with Heather Mattson-McCrady (Manager, Family Centred Care) to present the results of the recent Family Centred Care Survey at
Pediatric Grand Rounds

ON THE ROAD - NICU NIDCAP TRAINERS MEETING, WINSTON-SALEM, NORTH CAROLINA

Left to right:  Marcel Panas (Coordinator, Family Centred Care), Leonora Hendson, (Neonatologist & NIDCAP Professional - Calgary), Andrea Nykipilo (NIDCAP Trainer in Training), Carol-Anne Middleton (Unit Manager & NIDCAP Professional), Juzer Tyebkhan (Neonatologist & NIDCAP Trainer in Training), Hannah Abdellateef (NICU Fellow & NIDCAP Trainee) Dr. Joy V. Browne (NIDCAP Master Trainer, University of Colorado & Honorary Canadian) show their Canadian Pride in North Carolina!

Canadians, and the Stollery in particular, were well represented at the 24th annual NICU NIDCAP Trainers Meeting held in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  The event was attended by 65 people including physicians, nurses, professors and families representing 11 countries and four continents dedicated to the neuro-developmental care of babies in the NICU.

While the purpose of the Trainers Meeting is to learn from others and share knowledge around the optimal care of these infants, a theme of supporting the staff in supporting the family in supporting the child was prevalent throughout.

In addition to the many engaging conversations, networking opportunities and team building exercises, the Stollery formally participated by:

  • Dr. Leonora Hendson & Marcel Panas shared the results of the recent Family Centred Care Survey and the initiatives of the NICU Family Advisory Care Team which influenced the results
  • Dr. Juzer Tybekhan shared the Stollery's response to a recent meta-analysis on NIDCAP and its affect on outcomes
  • Marcel Panas & Dr. Juzer Tybekhan joined an international panel of family members reflecting on Dr. Heidelise Als presentation on "The Newborn and the Meaning of Family"

The Canadian contingent, recognized as "the most impressive team" by NIDCAP Federation International President, Dr. Gretchen Lawhon, left the conference with a new energy to continue the important work in creating Canada's first NIDCAP training centre.  Not only was this a great opportunity to learn about what others are doing throughout the world but to share the Stollery's leadership and commitment to Family Centred Care leaving one participant to state:

"Your hospital is the gold standard to which all other hospitals should aspire to be."

Participants of the 24th NIDCAP Trainers Meeting representing 12 disciplines (including families, physicians and nurses) from 11 countries on 4 continents

ON THE ROAD - CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF PEDIATRIC HEALTH CENTRES (CAPHC) CONFERENCE, TORONTO, ON

Four Stollery Family Centred Care Network family members joined staff and physicians in representing the Stollery at the CAPHC conference in Toronto, ON from October 19th - 23rd.  Family members who attended included: Dee-Ann Scwhanke (Co-Chair, FCC Council), Allan MacDermaid (Co-Chair, NICU FACT & Member, FCC Council), Jodie Craven (Member, FCC Council) & Ali Martens (FCC Council).

The week began with the gathering of members of various patient and family advisory councils across Canada during the annual Canadian Family Advisory Networks (CFAN) annual meeting.  This was an opportunity to network, learn what others are doing to further Family Centred Care in their centres while sharing many of the initiatives that the Stollery is leading in.

The week continued with the beginning of the CAPHC conference which included workshops, plenary speakers, motivational presenters and social activities: all providing opportunities to share knowledge and experience.

Ali Martens (FCC Council Family Member), Dr. Chloe Joynt (Neonatologist) and Marcel Panas (Coordinator, Family Centred Care) were invited by CAPHC to present the Stollery's leadership in engaging families in the training of NICU fellows during a concurrent session.  The presentation was well received and inspired thoughtful discussion among the participants.

We wish to express our sincere appreciation to the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation for their continued support in providing funding for the four family members to travel to this important gathering.
