What brought you to the NICU FACT?

My son, Kane, spent 54 days at the Royal Alexandra Hospital.  My husband, Harrison, and I had a relatively positive experience and want the same to be true for other families.

What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you?

I am a passionate photographer (but a teacher in real life).  I have recently started to do some "voluntography" for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

What is something that the FACT has done (past or present) that you are excited about?

I'm excited about getting involved with peer support!

What brought you to the NICU FACT?

I have always loved working with families and staff. I learn so much from the families regarding the care their child(ren) need and how to deliver it that I find it makes my job easier. I wanted to work closely with families and staff to bridge the gap between the two and facilitate each group in understanding why the other works/responds in the manner they do. I strongly believe collaboration is key to optimal care and working together provides better results.

What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you?

I am married and a mother to two healthy boys and they are and always will be my priority. Family makes my world a better place. This is why I love working with families and caring for babies. I want to share the joy and amazing love that one feels when a family is built and created.

What is something that the FACT has done (past or present) that you are excited about?

I am so proud of the amount of presentations we are doing collaboratively. Staff truly begin to understand the family perspective when they can hear it firsthand. It is so inspiring to hear from families that our work makes a difference and that we are good at what we do. Sometimes we learn things can be done differently but we also take home the message that so much of what we do means the world to families. It is exciting to work together and learn from each other.

CELEBRATING OUR CHAMPIONS

PICU Clinical Nurse Educator, Lorraine Hodson (holding sign), receives her FCC Champion pin from Karen Klak (left) and Karen Calhoun (right)

The Clinical Nurse Educators and Specialists throughout the Stollery champion the message of Family Centred Care in all they do to educate our staff.

CNE, Kim Boyko, calls the hour (which usually ends up being much longer) that families spend talking about Family Centred Care in the PCVICU and the Med/Surge PICU to the be the most important part of the orientation for new nurses. This is but one example of the dedication that Kim Boyko, Lorraine Hodson, and all Clinical Nurse Educators and Specialists throughout the Stollery to patients, families and Family Centred Care.
Thank you for being champions!!!

  • Research literature indicates organizations who commit to FCC have improved patient care results and improved staff morale.

HOW ARE WE DOING?   FAMILY CENTRED CARE SURVEY RESULTS

"Communicating with all teams ... nurses, doctors, staff, social workers, etc. all helps when my child is in hospital.

They all work together to help me understand the options I have regarding my child's health."
 - Family response to FCC Survey

This past May and June 378 staff and 1,461 family members of inpatient and outpatient clinics and services completed a FCC survey sharing their perceptions regarding the delivery of family-centred care at the Stollery.

Results:

Both quantitative and qualitative data provide a strong endorsement for FCC and its delivery at the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Families in particular gave high ratings and wrote many positive comments regarding the respectful, supportive care they received, and the degree to which they felt they were partners in care.  Staff ratings were also high, although slightly lower than those given by families.

2013 provider responses were significantly higher than they were in 2010.

 Recommendations:

Provide more accessible & better resources for specific conditions and community supports.

Improve and enhance hospital processes including but not limited to: referrals, bookings, access to medical records and discharge processes.

Develop and implement processes to ensure consistency in the manner in which the care team collects and disseminates information to patients and families.  E.g. bedside rounds.

Evaluate and improve the non-medical aspects of family centred care at the Stollery.  E.g. unit orientations, evening programming, and family room promotion.

Evaluate and make changes to the physical space to ensure the whole family is accomodated.

A full report of the Survey will be available in October.

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITY: STOLLERY WEBSITE
The Stollery Children's Hospital is in the infancy stages of creating its own website.  We are looking for 4 or 5 family members who would be willing to take part in one, 2 hour focus group in the next two weeks.  This group will provide input from a family perspective on three basic questions:

What do families want to know before they get to the hospital?

What do families want to know while they are in the hospital?

What do families want to know about the clinics and other outpatient services?

If you are interested in sharing your thoughts about the direction of the new Stollery Website, please email:

NICU PROGRAM CELEBRATES 40 YEARS!

NICU Nurse, Jodi Jubinville, and her energetic team warm up

the NICU Fun Runners with some Zumba!

The NICU program celebrated an incredibly milestone in September.  40 years ago, Dr. David Schiff started the NICU program in Edmonton.  A program which has grown to be one of the most well respected in the country.

The celebrations included staff social and education functions and culminated with the first ever NICU Fun Run in the Park. Over 300 NICU grads, families, staff and phyiscians gathered together on a perfect September Saturday to have fun.  Staff reunited with families.  Grads reunited with other grads.  One of the many highlights included a touching address from Dr. David Schiff's wife, Sari Schiff.

It was a remarkable day and kudos to the NICU staff, physicians and FACT members who organized this event. Everyone agrees that this should be an annual event.

The event raised over $20,000 for the Stollery Children's Hospital Foundation towards research in the NICU program.

WELCOMING NEW PHYSICIANS AND STAFF  TO FAMILY CENTRED CARE

NICU Family Advisory Care Team Family Member, Joyce Tang,

joins FCC Staff Member, Marcel Panas, to welcome

NICU Fellows to Family Centred Care at the Stollery

September was another busy month as FCC Network Family Members welcomed many new staff and physicians to Family Centred Care at the Stollery Family at their various orientations.

Karen Calhoun and Poonam Madan presented to new Pediatric Nurses.  Karen Calhoun and Karen Klak welcomed many new PICU nurses in two different orientations.  And Joyce Tang spent an afternoon with the NICU Fellows.  Each of these sessions resulted in great conversations about patients, families and staff working together to improve the experience for all.

Thank you to all of our families who volunteer their time and their stories an average of one presentation a week, all year long.
