TRACY MACDONALD
|

Dear All,
How pleased I am to be in my new role as the Executive Director for the Stollery Children's Hospital. A nurse by profession, I worked clinically for 10 years before completing my graduate degree in Health Administration and began my administrative career at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. I have held a number of different senior executive positions in healthcare across Canada over the past 15 years and most recently was the senior administrator at Kelowna General Hospital, a tertiary referral centre in the interior of British Columbia. How wonderful it is to be back in a children's hospital and in many ways I feel my career has come full circle. One of the aspects of the Stollery Children's Hospital that truly attracted me to the role was the amazing work you have accomplished in advancing Family Centred Care. A passionate believer myself in the value of engaging our patients and their families as partners in care, I am very impressed with the progress you have made and the commitment to this philosophy that is embedded in how things are done at the Stollery. I have had the pleasure of meeting Heather McCrady, Manager of Family Centred Care and Marcel Panas, the Program's Coordinator. In addition, I have met members of the Family Advisory Council and I am very impressed with the energy and enthusiasm displayed for this important work. The contributions made by our many family members are significant and the program is enriched by the ideas, the discussions and feedback and by the many volunteer hours of contribution to the different programs and initiatives within this service. Thank you to all of you who help make this happen.
I am looking forward to being part of the future as we continue to grow the program and advance the concepts of Family Centred Care at the Stollery Children's Hospital.

FCC STAFF PUBLISHED IN NIDCAP NEWSLETTER
|
These are indeed exciting times for the NICU program in the region as they accelerate efforts to create a NIDCAP (Newborn Individualized Developmental Care and Assessment Program) training center in Edmonton.
Coincidentally, the NIDCAP Federation International just recently published their bi-annual newsletter which included an article written by Marcel Panas, Coordinator, Family Centred Care who shares his family experience in the NICU. The link to the newsletter can be found at: (Marcel's story begins on page 4)

As we continue to recognize our Family Centred Care Champions, we wish to especially recognize the many staff, physicians and family who have lent their time as members or who directly support the work of the FCC Council and NICU Family Advisory Care Team since they both began meeting in the fall of 2009. Members of both councils gather monthly for regular meetings, attend various committee meetings and also provide countless hours supporting the FCC Network's many initiatives. It is through the work of these councils that the seeds of many Family Centred Care initiatives have been planted and successfully carried out. They set direction and priorities for the incredible work that has been accomplished in the past 4 years.
We recognize members of both of these councils who have served more than two years as Family Centred Care Champions. Over the next couple of months, we will be making sure that eligible council members will get their pins!
Regardless of how long you have served on either council, we sincerely thank the over 100 members who have, at one time or another, served on these councils.

 | Dee-Ann Schwanke, Co-Chair, Family Centred Care Council (Holding the FCC Checkmark!) and Marcel Panas, Coordinator, Family Centred Care (far right) spend time with members of Facilities Maintenance & Engineering |
Whether you are at the bedside or behind the walls (literally), everyone has a role to play in providing quality care to our patients and their families. Members of the Family Centred Care Council and Network recently joined staff of Facilities and Maintenance during one of their recent, early morning daily LEAN meetings. It was an opportunity to learn about all that is involved in maintaining a safe, efficient and effective environment for patients, families, staff, volunteers, visitors and anyone else who enters the building.
Not only by ensuring that the medical equipment is working in the way it's supposed to or that the lights are on for people to see, they also strive to save the cost of operating this campus by reducing power needs, etc. - savings that go directly back to the care at the bedside.
Dee-Ann Schwanke, Co-Chair, Family Centred Care Council, thanked the team directly for making sure that her son and other children like him get the air they need to breathe, the power to run their medical equipment, clean water for the surgeons to use in the OR and the list goes on.

RECOGNIZING OUR CHAMPIONS!
|
There are many people who do great things to unleash the culture of Family Centred Care at the Stollery Children's Hospital. We have introduced a program to recognize these individuals or groups as Family Centred Care Champions, celebrate their contributions and share the results of their efforts with others to further the growth of Family Centred Care.

The Clinical Nurse Educators and Specialists throughout the Stollery champion the message of Family Centred Care in all they do to educate our staff. This is especially true in the NICU where they team up with families to illustrate FCC during new staff orientations, they share their own experiences and learning in how they educate staff and they model it through how they do their day to day work. It is through their work that they inspire others to be patient and family centred in how they carry out their duties and for this, we recognize our NICU CNS and CNEs as Family Centred Care Champions!
Do you know a person or team who should be recognized as champions?
A "Champion" can be best described by one or more of the following statements:
- Have been directly involved in the development of the Family Centred Care Network and/or its initiatives
- They will have demonstrated the principles of Family Centred Care in their own practice and through their own modeling and leadership, have influenced others to be family centred in how they carry out their duties
- Have provided a significant contribution to a project or event that helps promote and carry out the philosophies of Family Centred Care at the Stollery
If this describes anyone you know, please send a brief description as to why you feel they should be recognized to:

A GREAT RESPONSE RATE TO DATE: FAMILY CENTRED CARE SURVEY
|
We are excited to see so many families and staff responding to the Survey. As of June 14th 1,413 families, 47 physicians / residents, and 295 staff have responded. The distribution and collection of surveys ends on June 28th, and then the work of compiling and analyzing the data will begin.
Thank You to everyone who has consistently invited families to respond to the survey. A special thanks goes out to:
- Family member Christie Oswald who has over the past two months on a weekly basis invited inpatient families to participate in the survey.
- Oupatient Clinic and Dayward staff who have continued to ask family members for their feedback on a daily basis.
- To all of the staff and physicians who have shared how they perceive family centred care in their daily work with children and families.
We look forward to reviewing the expected rich responses from staff and families and to share this with you this coming fall.
