Each month, we will introduce you to two members of the Family Centred Care Council and NICU Family Advisory Care Team. This month we feature three NICU Family Advisory Care Team (FACT) members, Andrea Brand, a Nurse in the NICU at the David Schiff site, and family members Allan MacDairmid (co-chair of FACT) and Jodie Craven.

ANDREA BRAND
| |
What brought you to the NICU Family Advisory Care Team?
I was interested in hearing the families feedback about the care we provide in the NICU. As a bedside nurse, joining the team was a unique opportunity to find ways of improving my practice as well as the way we practice as a team in the NICU.
What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you?
we are expecting our second child in August !
What is something that NICU FACT has done (past or present) that you are excited about?
I like that we did a petition to try to get free parking for parents in the NICU. I hate that family members have to pay for parking at all when one of their loved one is in hospital.

MEMBERSHIP CORNER -
JODIE CRAVEN & ALAN MacDAIRMID
|
 | Jodie Craven, Allan MacDairmid and two week old Malcolm MacDairmid! |
What brought you to the FCC Council?
Our first son, Frazer, spent six weeks in PICU/NICU with a congenital heart defect before passing away. We wanted to advocate for families who will have to face similar circumstances in the future.
What is the one thing you would like network members to know about you? We are proud parents who love sharing stories about Frazer and his younger brother Malcolm who is almost three weeks old. What is something the Council has done (past or present) that you are excited about? Sharing experiences with other staff and family members and using those experiences to promote family centered care. For example, we are working on a new initiative to help families track and celebrate milestones that are unique to life in the NICU.

EMPATHY: EXPLORING THE HUMAN CONNECTION
|
"What if you could see people's thoughts, feelings?"
The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, does an amazing job answering this question through a video they produced entitled "Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care"
We encourage you to take a few minutes to look at this video at the following link. It will be sure to make you wonder with compassion about the stranger that passes you in the hallway and challenge you to put yourself in the shoes of the people you care for (at home and at work).
Thank you to Anne Lemieux, Senior Consultant - Patient Engagement, Alberta Health Services, for sharing this powerful video!

We are thrilled to announce the first of our two inaugural recipients of the soon to be coveted Family Centred Care Champion pin!

McEwan University - 4th Year Nursing Students - Bereavement & Loss
Family member Karen Klak and MU Faculty and previous Clinical Nurse Specialist with the Stollery Children's Hospital, Hope Chick, shared their own experiences of preparing for and dealing with loss to 4th year nursing students. The audience was captivated by the two perspectives, one of a mom and the other of a caregiver, during their own very personal experiences through the end of life journey.
Communicating with Residents
Family members, Darlene Thompson and Karen Calhoun,
spent an afternoon with Residents from Surgery, Emergency, PICU and Cardiology during their weekly Academic Half Day. The presentation about communication with families quickly turned into an engaging and sincere conversation which lasted 30 minutes longer than the 1:15 that was originally scheduled for this presentation. Special thanks to PICU Intensivist, Dr. Dan Garros, for your leadership in engaging families in education of our Residents.
University of Alberta Nutrition Students - Tube Feeding
Family members, DeeAnn Schwanke and Tara Hergott, teamed up once again to share the experiences of their families living with a child who has a g-tube. This is the second year that DeeAnn and Tara have presented to U of A Nutrition Students. The student evaluations always indicate this presentation as a high light in their education.
McEwan University - 3rd Year Nursing Students - Tube Feeding
Family member, Dee-Anne Schwanke, shared the journey of their son and entire family as they experience life with a g-tube. Her ability to share her story with honesty and sincerity, mixed in with a little humor, really connected with the three 3rd year university nursing students.
Family member's, Dee-Ann Schwanke and Christina Herbers, along with Clinical Nurse Educator, Wanda Ma, welcomed 17 new staff to the Stollery during their orientation.
Thank you to all of the family members and staff who collaborated together to provide these amazing presentations. The evaluations for all presentations had a profound impact on the participants.
