Scripture

Galatians 6:7, 8- "Do not be deceived, God cannot be mocked.  A man reaps what he sows.  The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction.  The one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life."  It is important what seeds we are sowing so we know what crops we will be reaping!

Why Do Parents Choose WVCS?
BY LORI WILSON  I just wanted you to know how much Daeshana  (Kindergarten) is absolutely loving Spanish class!  She's singing songs at home and saying words.  When I ask her what she's singing, she gets a big huge smile on her face and embarrassingly says, "Something Mrs. Pacheco taught me".  It's so cute! Thanks for what you do for my kids.  It's awesome to see how excited they are and what incredible role models God has given them the privilege to be around. Thank you!

Thank You from Pastor Kirby

Dear Parents of WVCS,

We cannot say enough about the importance of having a safe school to send our kids to! Read the paper. Look at the news. The security measures for our Campus have given us all great peace of mind. Thank you for your sacrificial gifts that have made a huge difference! We are very proud and grateful for the strides made to give us a much safer school. Thank you and bless you!

MAGAZINE DRIVE RESULTS

Thank you, everyone, for your efforts and eagerness in promoting our magazine and cookie dough fundraiser!  We are currently tabulating the sales and prize categories and will announce when we will be making the prize presentations.  It was a very successful event and we know you worked hard contacting co-workers, friends and relatives.  Please thank them for supporting West Valley Christian School. We appreciate you and them.

If your child did not receive one penguin for each sold item (paper or on-line), please send a note with them (to give to me) with the number of additional penguins they should receive.  These little penguins were very popular and we want to make sure everyone gets what they should have.

Lastly, we have arranged for the cookie dough containers to be distributed on Thursday, May 2. Please mark your calendar. Let us know if you cannot pick up your cookie dough on that day so we can make arrangements for cold storage. Please feel free to contact me at 818-884-4710 ext. 243.

Blessings to you,

Pam Morrison

Middle School Life
TECHNOLOGY    Tech Crew by Melissa "Clutch" Vaughn

Middle school students have a special opportunity to learn valuable skills and serve the school by being part of the Tech Crew. Kyle "Spot Boy" Crouse, Nolen "Sound Boy" Gavino, and Lauren "Light Girl" Holtzman are in their second year with the Tech Crew. They've learned how to run the soundboard and light board in the Worship Center, as well as the scoreboard for the athletic events. "We have a lot of fun during the plays being in the booth running the tech side of it," said Lauren who generally runs the light board. Kyle is looking to the future, "I like this because I love to work in tech, and it could be a job in the future that I would like to do." Kyle is the lead at the scoreboard; you can see him at every home game. Nolen and Kyle are diligent about coming in early every Wednesday to set-up all of the equipment for chapel. They even willingly give some or their entire nutrition break to make sure Mrs. Stalboerger has everything she needs for the elementary chapels.

According to Nolen, "My favorite part of tech is when we get to be ninja-like on the stage to fix something with the sound.Another key component to the Tech Crew is the Deck Crew - the students that learn the support side of stage production. Nicknamed the "Money Team", they help with painting the set pieces, changing sets during a show, and any other backstage needs in a production. Lorenz "Money" Ross, Steven "Fifty Cent"  Petynia, Calissa "Quarter" Blodgett, Brandon "Dime" Ek, Max "Nicklé" Drago, and Katherine "Peso" Miles are excited for their second big spring production.  "Being on Deck Crew teaches you appreciation for the people behind the scenes," said Calissa. Max likes "being part of a team, having fun, and working together. Plus we get cannolis after the matinee."

ACUITY ASSESSMENT
Assessment! Acuity, Terra Nova, and Acing the Test
BY LAUREN DAVIS
Sharpened pencils, and a week of focus will reveal how much our students have learned this year. Last week West Valley Christian School assessed students through Terra Nova Assessment testing. From math to Bible, students take standardized tests to assess their learning. It is important to gauge student critical thinking skills against the objectives and standards we set for our students. As our school gears up to better align our objectives to the common core, Acuity testing will allow teachers to assess students standard by standard, unit by unit. Ongoing testing allows teachers to measure what students remember over time, not just the last lesson. The ability for teachers to re-teach and respond to specific student needs is better than ever with Acuity. Flexibility with online and home testing is allowing teachers to authentically measure student learning at home and at school. The future of WVCS is bright with such excellent assessment tools as Acuity and Terra Nova testing.

Justus Pratt, Jayden Brown, Colby Ek, Katie Sewell and Joshua Swales all participated in the science experiment.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

5th grade has a special opportunity to hear a science lesson from our MS science teacher, Miss Lauren Davis! They learned about Newton's Law of Motion and how the effect of collisions depends on the mass and speed of objects. They not only learned new vocabulary such as "inertia," but also were able to conduct hands-on collisions with marbles and observe the effects! Thank you, Miss Davis!

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

BY KIM HOEVEL

Fifth grade had the wonderful opportunity to experience how America became the nation that it is today by dressing up, memorizing lines, and becoming key figures in history. This is definitely a highlight in the 5th grade. Thank you to California Weekly for walking us through the American Revolution!

I liked Storm, the falcon who scares away the see gulls. I am going to throw trash in the trash cans and put recycling in the bins." Dominique Romano

BY CHRISTINA STALBOERGER
Third grade visited the Simi Valley Landfill in preparation to celebrate Earth Day. We toured with Landfill Lisa in an air conditioned bus and learned the value of REDUCING, REUSING, RECYCLING AND REPURPOSING! We met Storm, their sea gull chasing falcon! This is one of our favorite field trips this year!
The third grade is recycling their used paper.

BY CHRISTINA STALBOERGER

The students created posters to remind our school of the importance of Earth Day. Some of the slogans were:

Keep Our World Clean! -  Victoria
Go Green! Be a Member of the Green Team! - Dominique
Never Litter! Save the World! - Tristen Pratt
No Littering! We need to keep our place clean and no littering! - Noah

After visiting the Simi Valley Landfill 3rd grade is trying to reduce the amount of trash we are adding to our landfills by bringing our snacks and lunches in reusable containers and using both sides of our paper before getting a new sheet.

PRESCHOOL
INVITATION from Mrs. Wong
Preschool parents, please join us for Coffee and Conversation on Wednesday, May 8 form 8:30 - 9:00 a.m. at the preschool tables!  Have some coffee and get to know someone new!  Our kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Marissa Salas will be there for you to meet. I know some of you have not met her and this will be a great opportunity to ask questions about our kindergarten, whether or not your child will be going in August or the following year.

See you at the tables on Wednesday, May 8!
SHOP WITH SCRIP   The scrip program at WVCS is a fund raiser that doesn't cost anything because you would have spent that money anyway.  We simply ask you to use a gift card instead of a check or cash or credit card.  About 60% of our families are regular users.  Thank you!!  We'd like to see 100% plus friends and family members.  Scrip income supplements tuition income (about $15,000 per year) and could be significantly higher if everyone got on board.  The top three sellers are gas cards (Arco, Chevron, Exxon/Mobil, Shell), grocery stores (Albertsons, Vons/Pavilions/Safeway, Smart & Final, Whole Foods), and Target/Walmart.

The newly introduced SHOP WITH SCRIP allows you to order scrip online, pay the school, and pick up your order when it arrives.  AMERICAN EXPRESS (can be used at COSTCO & TRADER JOE'S) can be ordered through SHOP WITH SCRIP.  Try it; it's easy!

You can purchase SCRIP on-line now!
