September Fishing Forecast
September is one of our favorite months of the year. The weather is typically good and it is a great time to take advantage of the diverse fishing choices available on the Olympic Peninsula.
The rivers are still running low but we usually receive some rain during September. These small rain events are great because they pull fresh fish into the rivers and make the fish that have been in the rivers a bit friskier. We also start to see the beginning of the October Caddis hatch. Skating dry flies for summer steelhead and sea-run cutthroat is a great way to spend a day on the water. Look for sea-run cutthroat numbers to build the entire month.
If the weather stays dry check out the glacial rivers. They should remain at low levels with good clarity. September offers some of the best summer fishing on the glacial rivers.
The saltwater fishing remains good throughout September. Neah Bay will close later in the month, but there will still be pink salmon moving through the Strait in early-September as well as increasing numbers of coho salmon. Look for tide rips offshore and swirls along the kelp beds to locate fish. For beach anglers, the points around Port Townsend will have salmon swimming close by throughout the month.
Often forgotten during good salmon fishing are the saltwater cutthroat along the beaches. They are still swimming and feeding along the beaches. Move away from the salmon fishermen and you just might find some great fishing with no one else around.
Of course, the lake fishing remains a great option. The fish in the high lakes will be feeding heavily before the winter snows arrive. Cooler temperatures should wake up the trout in the lowland lakes. Lake Crescent remains a great option as well.
We hope you get out on the water in September and learn why we all wish it lasted another month.

Farewell
Much to our dismay, Chris Bellows has recently moved away from the Olympic Peninsula to Southwest Florida. Chris is very well respected here in the Northwest and he will be missed by a lot of fellow anglers.
Chris was Dave's first employee way back in 1998 at the original location on Oak Street. Chris' fishing passion has always centered on the saltwater and it wasn't long before he started guiding fly anglers to the amazing saltwater fishing out at Neah Bay.
Chris has been instrumental in getting our website and online presence to where it is today, and for that alone we owe him a huge thank you. He will still be helping out in that regard from across the country but will no longer be in the shop giving us a hard time for forgetting to take pictures on our fishing trips.
We look forward to seeing pics and hearing stories about his saltwater trips from Florida and hopefully hopping on a plane to chase fish with him once he gets things figured out.
All the best Chris!
