Summer Steelhead Patterns
Summer steelhead are in the rivers and it is time to get tying and stock up the boxes for these spectacular sea-run rainbow trout. Here are a few of the flies we have confidence in.
Dave caught his first steelhead on the Grande Ronde around 1985 while taking a break from guiding in Montana. He was instantly addicted and spent his winters on the Olympic Peninsula chasing steelhead before moving here permanently twelve years later.

Isabella SpeyDave created this pattern for inland rivers such as the Snake and Thompson. Luckily for Peninsula anglers it works great on our coastal rivers too.

Harry Lemire's Grease Liner is one of the best surface flies for steelhead that exists. Dave likes the fact that it is easy to tie and flat out works.
|
Curt caught his first steelhead on the fly over ten years ago on the Hoh River with his dad. He ended up hooking three that day and has been addicted to steelhead ever since.
|
|
This variation of the Silver Hilton is one of Curt's favorite flies. The color and flash combined with the motion of the hackle wing make this pattern so productive.

|
Ally's ShrimpShrimp flies are not just for winter steelhead. This pattern, tied on a #6 hook, works well on all of our rivers. It especially shines on the glacial rivers that have a bit of color in them all summer.
|
Chris pulls himself away from the saltwater a couple days a summer to chase steelhead. His favorite salt patterns are surface flies, so it should come as no surprise that his river box is filled with waking dries.

Coon Muddler
This custom fly tied by John Alevras is Chris's go-to pattern for searching for summer-runs.
| |
|
Skate'n FoolThis pattern combines black foam and a white wing which makes it easier to track on the water in low light and turbulent water. The foam keeps it floating all day long.

Trip of The Week
With Bella still nursing a leg injury, Dave let everyone in the shop get out and take advantage of the great weather on opening day last Saturday. She's almost back to 100% and soon will be dragging Dave back out to the rivers while Curt, Sean and Chris man the store.
Sean hit the Lake Crescent Opener and was able to find some nice trout for his clients. Baitfish patterns on a sinking line worked best. This is a great fishery that is close to town. Click Here to learn more about the classes and clinics we are offering this summer on Lake Crescent. It is a unique body of water and fishes differently than most other lakes.
Curt drove out to Forks early Saturday morning ready to chase summer steelhead. It was a busy day on the river but that didn't deter his clients from hooking a fresh summer steelhead. The river flows were high after last week's rain but have been dropping since. This week should be good with no rain in sight.
Chris headed out to Neah Bay over the weekend. Canada opened their offshore waters to silver salmon June 1 and he ran the boat across the border to chase salmon. You cannot land Canadian caught salmon in a U.S. port closed to salmon fishing, but there's no rule against catch and release. He landed one wild coho and saw lots of other salmon feeding on tiny shrimp. Numbers of fish should continue to build offshore especially once the pinks arrive.
Summer always seems to fly by. Take advantage of all the great fishing opportunities available and get out on the water.
