Trip of The Week
With most of the rivers around here closed in May, Sean was itching to do some river fishing so he packed up the rig and headed to Montana for a few days to search for trout.
View from the riverside cabin along the river.
A nice brown trout.
Sean found a few nice rainbows too. Sean hooked fish on both dry flies and nymphs. His top dry fly was a Parachute Adams and the top nymph was a size 16 Copper John. Sean is glad to be back and is now busy getting ready for Saturday's river and Lake Crescent opener.

June Fishing Forecast
June marks the beginning of summer here in the Pacific Northwest and the next couple months will be a fly fishing frenzy with long days and tons of fishing opportunities.
We cannot contain our excitement to be able to get out and fish all the rivers that re-open June 1st. WDFW plants summer run steelhead in the Calawah and Sol Duc and the Hoh Rivers gets stray hatchery fish from these and other rivers. There are a few wild steelhead around too. Sea-run cutthroat will also be in the rivers and can be caught on both dry flies and streamers. The best resident trout fishing will be higher in the river systems. One major summer rule change we discuss later in the newsletter is that the Hoh River inside the National Park will be closed all summer.
The other big news is that Lake Crescent opens June 1st. This large body of water just west of Port Angeles offers good fishing along the shorelines for rainbow and cutthroat trout. We are offering guided trips and classes on Lake Crescent all summer long. It sure will be nice to be able to stop and cast to all the rising fish we've been seeing over the past couple months while heading back and forth to the steelhead rivers.
Of course, all of the other lakes already open on the Peninsula will continue to fish well. The further we get into the month the better the access to the alpine lakes in the Olympic Mountains is. Look at the lower elevation waters such as Lena, Mink, and Lake Angeles to become snow free first.

The saltwater fly fishing remains similar to May with sea-run cutthroat along the beaches and bottomfish in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Pacific Ocean. The coast (Neah Bay and La Push) opens for coho and pink salmon on June 29th. Late-June is a bit early for coho offshore but with this year's large forecast of pink salmon there will be plenty of them around on the opener.
Take advantage of all of these fly fishing options as summer never lasts as long as we would like.

Hoh River Closure
Olympic National Park just announced that the Hoh River and South Fork Hoh River inside the National Park will be closed until November 1st. The closure was done to protect the spring and summer chinook salmon that are forecast to return below escapement. We hope to get more answers in the weeks ahead and post them on our Blog and Facebook Page.
