Sun Protection
With the longest day of the year only a month away it is a good time to talk about sun protection. It is easy to get complacent in our cool and wet climate. While it may not feel like your skin is cooking like in the tropics, the results can be worse because many people do not protect themselves on an average summer day in Western Washington. We have long days and you can get a bad sunburn even on a foggy day. Wearing good sunglasses and applying sunscreen are the first lines of defense. The second line of defense is clothing that blocks out the harmful effects of the sun. Not only do they give you UV protection but they are comfortable and can keep you cooler in hot weather. Another benefit to the UV clothing is that you won't have to apply sunscreen to the areas they cover.

Simms has improved upon the popular Buff. They have included breathing holes to reduce fogging of sunglasses and increased the amount of material around the neck to give full coverage. This product is the best way to protect your face, neck and ears.

Your hands need protection too. Many of us do not want the smell of sunscreen on our flies so we too often leave our hands unprotected. The Simms Sunglove also has reinforced paneling in high abrasion areas.

Simms worked with Lefty Kreh to design this hat. It offers UPF 50+ protection, a long visor, and has extra fabric to protect the back of your head.
This glove not only blocks the sun but protects your fingers from line cuts that can happen when you strip line all day, which is common in our local saltwater fisheries.
The Solar Sombrero offers a wide brim for full coverage. It provides UPF 50+ protection and comes with a strap to keep it from blowing off.

You can now enjoy summer's sunny skies without worrying about harmful UV rays.
