Trip of the Week
Michel came out to fish the Olympic Peninsula rivers after a long spell of low water and tough fishing reports. He fished with Curt a couple summers ago and was serious about being ready for this trip.
Guide trips are a great way to learn how to fish and work on your casting but if you practice prior to the trip, the payoff in the fishing is likely to be worth it. Michel spent lots of time practicing his spey casting prior to the trip.
With all that practice he was able to work hard on fishing (mending, sinking the fly, the feel of the swing) and was rewarded with the kind of steelheading we all dream about.
Early in the day he swung up this perfect hen.
A little later in the day Michel connected with a big male steelhead . It might have had some color but the sea lice meant it was fresh from the saltwater.
Of course, a day with a guide can also be great practice for another fishing vacation. Michel is heading to Alaska this summer and was using this trip to not only catch some steelhead but to get better prepared for catching big chinook on the swing.
Michel, good luck in Alaska and send us a report when you get back. |

Summer Salmon Fishing Forecast
WDFW just released the 2013 Salmon run size forecasts. We thought it would be a great time to break down the numbers and get you as excited about these upcoming fisheries as we are.
This is an odd-numbered year and that means pink salmon will be make their bi-annual appearance. The Puget Sound pink returns continue their abundant trend with 6.2 million of these salmon expected to return. The Fraser River run adds another 8.9 million fish which means even more pink salmon available for anglers fishing the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The other salmon species we target with flies in the saltwater is the coho salmon. The offshore fisheries are driven by Columbia River (501,000) and Washington Coast (562,000) runs. These larger forecatss cause us to be cautiously optimistic about the fishing in coastal ports like Neah Bay. Adding the Puget Sound coho salmon numbers (882,000) and it looks like 2013 will also be another exceptional silver salmon year from Sekiu well into Puget Sound.
Read our Blog to stay updated on our local saltwater fly fishing seasons. We'll be talking more about the equipment, flies, and locations to have success catching saltwater salmon on the fly. |

2013 Questions Answered
Mike Charlton asked this week's question. He is interested in the value of buying whole skins versus smaller packages of feathers. His specific query is about our Guinea Skins and approximately how many packages of Large Eyed Strung Guinea are on a full skin.
There are around three packages of strung large eyed guinea on a full skin. The benefit of a full skin is the diversity of feathers, both size and quality. A full skin will give you a large number of not only the large-eyed guinea but also the smaller eyed feathers as well as smaller large-eyed feathers.
Mike, hopefully this will help you decide whether to buy a full skin or packs of strung feathers.
