February 9th Newsletter

Welcome to the Waters West newsletter.  This newsletter features a great winter steelhead pattern as our Featured Fly, our upcoming Fishing Forecast,  some great products, and a great tying material we have on sale.
Featured Fly

Strung-Out Rockstar

Pink is one of our favorite colors for winter steelhead and the Strung-Out Rockstar is an excellent pattern.

This fly is tied on the string attaching the rear hook to the shank.  The dubbing, schlappen, and ostrich plumes combine to create a fly with incredible movement and action underwater.

Tie one of these on the end of your line and fish with confidence.
Fishing Forecast

Wild winter steelhead are the primary focus in February with each pulse of higher water bringing in more bright fish. February also sees some of the largest wild steelhead of the winter season.

The nice thing about February is the diversity of opportunities available for the steelhead angler.  While most of the Strait of Juan de Fuca streams closed at the end of January there are still a lot of small coastal creeks and tributaries open through the end of this month.  These smaller waters fish well when other rivers are unfishable due to high water.  The smaller waters fish best with nymphing techniques and smaller egg patterns.  This fishing is tight quarters fly fishing with lots of bushwacking to get to the water.

We are often guilty of getting so tunnel visioned when it comes to winter steelhead that we forget about the other fisheries available over the upcoming weeks and months.  Another great late-winter, early-spring fishery is the saltwater beach fishing for sea-run cutthroat.  The chum fry will start their migrations from the rivers to the ocean beginning in late-February and the sea-run cutthroat will not be far away.  We have an excellent selection of saltwater fly tying materials to help you create the perfect chum fry patterns.

Late-winter and spring are a great time to be fishing the Olympic Peninsula.
