Featured Fly - The Life Vest
Fall is one of the best seasons for waking dry flies for summer steelhead. A great pattern to raise a steelhead to the surface is the Life Vest, which is a John Aleveras original pattern. This pattern is proven from the coastal streams we call home to destination fisheries like the Dean River in British Columbia.
The deer hair body and white foam back make this pattern a high floating pattern that works well either with a half hitch or not. The white foam helps in tracking the pattern while it navigates across the currents. We carry this pattern in two sizes and in three different colors (Black, Natural, and Orange). All three colors work well all summer and fall but the Orange color is a fall favorite during the October Caddis hatch.
This is the time of year to raise a steelhead to a waking dry. Grab a Life Vest and fish the surface with confidence. |

Fishing Forecast
Fall is a fantastic time of year on the Olympic Peninsula and it is nearly impossible to take advantage of all of the great fishing coming up over the next couple weeks.
If we get some rain expect to see the first good push of fall salmon in the larger rivers along with increasing numbers of sea-run cutthroat in all of the rivers and creeks. Any bump in water levels should also bring in fresh summer-run steelhead.
The cooler nights are helping to drop and clear the glacial rivers. There is no better time to swing a dry line on the glacial rivers for summer steelhead.
The saltwater fishing in the Strait of Juan de Fuca should remain strong as fish keep moving from the Pacific into Puget Sound. Sekiu opens for wild coho retention the last half of September and through the end of October. This is a great time of year to bucktail or cast flies for large saltwater coho. For the shore bound angler there are coho passing within casting distance of the points near Port Townsend as well as sea-run cutthroat along the beaches on the East side of the Olympics.
The next few weeks also offer the last chance to fish the high alpine lakes in Olympic National Park. The cooler nights are also cooling off the lowland lakes. Fall is a great time for lake fishing as fish eat heavily before the cold winter months.
With all these options it may seem a little overwhelming, but rest assured we are here to help and we look forward to helping make your fall trips a success.

Upcoming Classes and Clinics
We are offering two Spey Casting and Steelhead Fishing classes this fall.
These full day classes take place on the water where you will learn the essential concepts of spey casting, as well as all of the major casts from both sides of the river. We will discuss and have available many different Scandi and Skagit heads that make learning to spey cast so much easier than it used to be. Also covered is casting and fishing dry lines, sink tips and heavy sunk flies so you can be prepared for year round steelhead fishing. Additional topics include reading water, run timings, fly selection and more.
We have two separate classes scheduled. The dates for the classes are:
