From Dr. Misner...
Holiday parties mean much more than free food and fun. They also can bring entrepreneurs a host of new opportunities to network and build relationships.
Most people think of networking only through the traditional venues, whether chamber of commerce events, business contact referral groups, or online sites such as LinkedIn. But holiday parties, including professional and industry social events where you can network with people outside your business, can be an even better time to introduce yourself to a new contact or share a friendly conversation with someone you already know.
Make sure you are prepared. Try to learn in advance the names of people you will likely chat with, their jobs and their recent accomplishments. You will need to do a little homework, perhaps a Google search and a look at their LinkedIn or Facebook pages. Use the information you glean to break the ice.

BNI Connecticut Success Stories!
Good Morning BNI! I'm Christopher MacCoy, owner and head technician of MacCoy Technology LLC in Vernon, Connecticut. I started the business October 1st, 2009 officially within the town of Coventry. Since December 20th, my birthday, 2010, I have been a member of Northeast CT BNI. I am very proud to be one of the first members of the chapter, and was able to experience the challenge of chartering a new BNI chapter. I'll admit, it took several invitations to attend my first meeting, for I am a night owl. However, once I'd seen it with my own eyes, I knew this was for me.
Prior to joining the chapter, my business location was 500 square feet on the second floor of a pro golf shop. Through the suggestion and push from my fellow BNI members, I moved to a much larger location in Vernon. It was 1200 square feet and had lots of foot traffic. I went from about 180 customers to 400 in no time. Now I am up to nearly a thousand. I have become so busy in fact, I've bought a new home and converted the first floor into a spacious and money saving shop. In July, we closed the store front because we no longer require the foot traffic to get new customers. BNI is the only advertising I currently do, and boy is it cheaper than any advertising I've ever done. Going from a one man operation to now having 3 technicians and myself, I can finally start getting my 8 hours of sleep again. The first half of most days now can be spent in my pajamas, usually customers don't mind... okay that was a joke, however having the business at home has made life a lot easier.

From Alice...
I am spending the last weeks of 2013 looking back and looking forward. What am I grateful for these past twelve months? I want to embrace those moments and events once again. What lessons did I learn that I should bring into 2014?
For all the members of BNICT, I want to make it an even more productive year for you. Therefore, I suggest that you look at the results of your membership this past year. Was the year as productive as you hoped for? If not, why not? What can I and the BNI Team do to make it even better in 2014?
I want 2014 to be your best year in BNICT. Please take some time to analyze your membership and let me know what worked and what did not. Email me at alice@bnict.com. Be sure to include your name and your chapter's name.
Wishing you and yours good health, great relationships and much success in 2014.
Sincerely,
Alice Ostrower
Executive Director, BNI CT
Feel free to email your questions to alice@bnict.com. You do not have to give your name or chapter name unless you prefer to. If you have additional questions to answers posted, please email me.
Thank you for your questions.

Heritage BNI (Southbury) Donates to Southbury Food Bank

As Thanksgiving approached, local families and food banks depended on donations of food and money to help families during the busy holiday season. In Southbury, the Heritage BNI chapter donated over $100 and several bags of food in support of this great cause.
The chapter has also adopted a Southbury family with four children for Christmas as well as buying a shelf at the food pantry which means that they will be supplying forty cans of chili per month for a year!
Great job Heritage BNI, way to live that Givers Gain philosophy!

Membership Extravaganza
From left to right: Joe Ostrower, Alice Ostrower, Beth Misner, Ivan Misner, Rich Stroiney, Maryann Stroiney, Jim Mark, Molly Mark.
This year's BNI Membership Extravaganza took place in Orlando, FL, where BNI members and directors met from across the United States, as well as one couple from Croatia. The Connecticut BNI team consisted of Alice and Joe Ostrower, Executive Directors and owners of the CT BNI Franchise, Rich Stroiney, the Regional Director and Trainer in BNI Connecticut, along with his wife MaryAnn, and Jim Mark, this year's winner of the CT Membership Extravaganza, from the Northeast Connecticut Networking BNI out of Coventry, with his daughter Molly Mark.
The weekend kicked off with a great presentation by Dr. Ivan Misner - this year's presentation was taken from one of his books, "Room Full of Referrals". Dr. Misner focused on identifying and defining the four major behavior styles, The Go-Getter, The Promoter, The Nurturer and The Examiner, each of which plays a different role in the chapters. He also helped the attendees how to adapt to working with each of the styles after a group exercise that helped each attendee better understand their own behavioral styles. "I can't wait to bring some of this back to my chapter," Jim said. "Ivan helped me better understand some of the members' approaches and I can see how I can use this to better understand my customers."
Following the morning workshop, the Connecticut delegation enjoyed the local sites, enjoyed time with family and the warm Florida October weather.
"BNI members should keep an eye out for the 2014 Membership Extravaganza" says Rich Stroiney, "The details of which should be coming from your Director Consultants over the next month. The 2014 event will be held in New Orleans, from October 10-13. Only BNI members who sponsor new members during the membership drive dates qualify."
"I am looking forward to having even more members qualify and win next year" Alice said recently. "Connecticut has always been one of the strongest regions in the United States and it would be great to have the members be recognized next year by qualifying to be part of the drawing." |

Ice Hockey and Networking - Why not?
Being a member of BNI not only gives you access to a great group of professionals in your chapter, but the opportunity to connect with members from across the state and around the world.
Sixty members and their families gathered for a great night of networking, ice hockey and food at a Bridgeport Soundtigers game at the Webster Bank Arena on Saturday, November 16.
The diverse group included representatives from many unique categories including an immigration attorney, a chocolatier, a Welcome Wagon representative, a signage company and a company specializing in catering and food distribution, among many others.
Dan Tamburro, a member of the Merritt Madness BNI in Norwalk and Group Sales Representative for Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment at the Webster Bank Arena, described the event as "a fun way to bring people together who 'understand' the benefits of networking, and more importantly, demonstrate Giver's Gain. We look forward to hosting more events to expand everyone's network."
