Dear Community Members,

What a great year we have had!  I can't believe all of the things I learned about our schools and our children.  As I think back on my first year as your Superintendent, all I can do is smile.  I knew from the beginning that Franklin Lakes was going to be special, and I thank you all for making this a memorable year.

The end of the school year has been full of celebration and reflection.  Memorable Moving Up ceremonies took place for our fifth grade students at CRS, HMR and WAS.  The halls echoed with the sounds of joy as everyone at each school "Clapped Out" the fifth graders, to wish them well in Middle School.  Our eighth grade students graduated, and will be moving on to high school.  They have accomplished many things and are truly ready for this next chapter in their lives.

As I reminded the FAMS class of 2015, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote "What lies behind us and what lies before us are small things compared to what lies within us."  Our children are well prepared to take the next step on their educational journey, and I want to once again congratulate all of our students on a job well done.

After a thorough search that involved staff, parents, administrators and members of the Board of Education, I am extremely honored to announce that Mrs. Ann Jameson has been selected as Principal of Woodside Avenue School.

Mrs. Jameson has spent the last two years as the district's Director of Curriculum. Her contributions to that role were of the highest caliber. Prior to her move to Central Office, Mrs. Jameson was a teacher at High Mountain Road School, serving in that role for approximately seven years.

Mrs. Jameson holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education and Communications from Boston College, and a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Highly regarded by staff, parents and students, Mrs. Jameson consistently demonstrates her abilities as an exemplary leader. During the interview process, Mrs. Jameson continued to be identified as an outstanding candidate by each of the three interview committees.

Her dedication to the district is constant, as are her passion for teaching and learning, her work ethic, her ability to create a vision for the future, and her willingness to make decisions collaboratively and with creativity. Mrs. Jameson has shown herself to be a leader who acts with integrity, and purpose, keeping our students as the central focus of her work. I am confident that Mrs. Jameson and Woodside are a perfect match!

Summertime is here and I hope you are planning to play, read, create, and have fun with your families and friends.  I am sure we will have great stories to tell when we see one another again in September.  Enjoy the time away from school, and treasure all of the memories you make.

I wish you all a relaxing, safe, and refreshing summer break.

Sincerely,

Lydia Furnari

FAMS:   GT Art Mural Unveiling

Our 8th Grade GT ART Mural illustrates the theme of imagination and creativity. Certain pieces of the mural reflect the theme significantly. The castle represents imagination with storybook characters emerging from the scene. The Knight represents the defender of creativity, fighting the dragon who is reflection of a threat to all creativity. The quote, "Fairy tales are more than true, not because they tell us that dragons exist but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten" by Neil Gaiman best portrays our 8th grade class since we are always fighting to be creative and apply our imagination especially in a time of academic competition.

FAMS:  PLC Event - Saying Hello to Familiar Faces

On June 16th, the Peer Leadership Corps organized a reunion for the FAMS class of 2011 students who are current high school seniors. Seventy-nine students came back to FAMS and enjoyed seeing their former teachers and catching up with classmates. Students were asked to write down their plans after graduation. Students are attending numerous colleges including Princeton, Bucknell, Boston College, NYU, John Hopkins, and Tulane University just to name a few. Best of luck to these former FAMS students!

FAMS:   Congratulations to the Class of 2015!

Last week, the FAMS community celebrated the scholastic and character achievements of 156 eighth graders with great pride. In an intimate awards ceremony held on June 15, awards were given to students for being distinguished in academic areas, citizenship, and overall outstanding achievement. The graduation ceremony was held on June 18th at Indian Hills High School. Amidst flowers, speeches, the class song and photographs, graduates were heard to comment how surreal it felt to finally be moving on from FAMS. The evening ended with a celebration hosted by the PTA held at the Indian Trail Club. We wish each and every student the best of luck in high school!

CRS News

CRS:  Final Farewell to the Class of 2015!

While cherishing the memories of a wonderful school year, we would like to take the opportunity to congratulate our Class of 2015 graduates. In the true spirit of our school, and fulfilling our

school motto of "Together We Can", we honored all of our fifth grade students in a Moving Up Ceremony that celebrated their spirits, quick wit, and boundless enthusiasm. Together with our families, we celebrated the children and wished them all the best in their future endeavors.  It was a pleasure to honor all that our graduates have accomplished and we look forward to all those adventures to come. Lastly, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our families and special staff members who have allowed our Proud Pandas to shine over the past six years.

HMR News

HMR:  Celebrating Our Fifth Graders!

The fifth grade class celebrated their accomplishments and successes in a Moving Up Ceremony in their honor.  The morning began as the fifth graders were clapped out of their own homerooms by the rest of the school.  The staff and students lined the hallways and clapped for their final walk through the halls.   Their families eagerly awaited their entrance to the ceremony. Dr. Furnari addressed the graduating class and shared a heartfelt message about how proud she was of their successes.  The building principal, Mrs. Bajzath, addressed the class utilizing the lyrics from their Talent Show performance song, I Lived.  She urged students to really make the most of every moment.

Students watched a montage of photos through the years. The montage highlighted the class' growth throughout the years and also celebrated each individual child (special thanks to Mrs. Berenson for creating this incredible montage).  Then students each shared their own favorite memory from their elementary school years, followed by singing their graduation song, The Best Day of my Life.   The ceremony ended with the awarding of the certificates of graduation and singing the HMR School Song together one last time.  We wish our 5th grade class the best as they move onto FAMS and hope they will always come back to visit and share their new accomplishments!  Congratulations to High Mountain Road School's graduating class of 2015!

WAS News

WAS:   Congratulations to our Fifth Graders!

The Woodside Avenue School 5th Grade Class of 2015 celebrated the end of their time at WAS in a very special ceremony, held on June 16, 2015. The ceremony was filled with reflection on the past and hope for the future. We could not be more proud of the accomplishments of this wonderful group of students.

Dr. Furnari reminded students that they are the authors of the next chapter of their lives, and that we are their biggest fans! Mrs. Cecere told students to learn from all of their life experiences, and Mrs. De Luccia, sent a message of congratulations from the PTA. While teachers reflected on the special qualities of this fifth grade, they then invited each graduate to share their own hope for the future. Under the direction of Mrs. Paz, the graduating class sang Beyonc's "I Was Here" and "For Good" from Wicked.

After the presentation of certificates, the graduates were "clapped out" by all of the Woodside students, staff, parents and friends. We know that they will do well and wish each and every one of them all the best in middle school. Congratulations to the 5th Grade Class of 2015!

WAS:   International Studies

As a culminating unit to their studies of Japan, Australia, and Greece, third graders in Ms. Meara's class were treated to special family presentations. Parents who were born in foreign countries were invited to teach the class about their cultures. The children were treated to spectacular PowerPoint shows, dancing, folk costumes, and foods. Countries represented were: Greece, Russia, Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey. The children learned so much and truly gained an appreciation for the international world community in which they live. Thank you to all the parents who enriched our studies with their presentations!
