School News and Views                         June  201

Dear Community Members,

It has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your superintendent of schools during these past four years. Our school community has accomplished so much and the District has done its best to keep you well informed through transparent processes and communications like this one. For the past four years, the District has brought you School News and Views, first as an e-blast newsletter attachment, then through Facebook, and now via Constant Contact. I hope you enjoy this final 2013-14 edition.

Before departing, I'll leave you with one more bit of leadership food for thought. Are things exactly the way you want them to be? If not, then think of Mahatma Gandhi when he said, "Be the change that you wish to see in the world." Get involved in your school community with eyes wide open. Ben Franklin said, "Believe none of what you hear, and only half of what you see." Ask questions and wait for answers. If you think your one voice is not important, you are absolutely wrong. "Be an upstander and not a bystander." Finally, I'll modify a quote from some shrewd folks High on the Mountain and say, "Rise above the rising above."

I wish you all the best.

Sincerely,

Frank Romano, III, Ed.D.

Superintendent of Schools

SNaV Curriculum:    Fizz, Boom, Read!

We are proud to announce our partnership with the Franklin Lakes Public Library's Summer Reading Program, Fizz, Boom, Read!  The 2014 Summer Reading Club is open to readers and pre-readers through grade 5 in Franklin Lakes.  Students can register for the program by visiting the library or by signing up online.  Throughout the summer, readers will keep track of the books they are reading to earn prizes.  Additionally, many fantastic events are planned at the library all summer long.  We are encouraging all children to sign up for the program and bring their completed reading logs to school in September to participate in a special celebration.  Principals and administrators will be visiting the library this summer and look forward to helping students choose their summer reading selections at the library's Kick Off Party on June 25th.  Please see the library brochure and additional information distributed at each school or visit the library's website for more information.  Looking for summer reading suggestions to get your child off to a great start?  Each year, a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books.  Click here to take a look at this year's list.    Happy reading!

SNaV Technology:  FAMS Parents - Don't Forget!

Parents of incoming 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, please remember to follow the directions in Principal Joseph Keiser's letter about

All entries and payments must be completed by August 31, 2014.

SNaV Business & Operations:   Working Together

Working together with the borough, the District will share the expense of improving the sidewalks at Woodside Avenue School this summer. The District will appropriate monies from NJ State Extraordinary Aid.

SNaV Special Services:  Farewell to Mrs. Warnke

The entire Franklin Lakes bids a fond farewell to Mrs. Marie Warnke, Special Education teacher at the District's Bright Horizon program at High Mountain Road School.  Mrs. Warnke has been with the District for 25 years and has been in the Special Education field for an impressive 40 years.  We wish her many years of happy, well deserved retirement!

SNaV FAMS:    Social Skills

Social Skills is a weekly group lesson.  It is collaboratively led by the speech therapist, Mrs. Christina Langella and the guidance counselor, Ms. Marybeth Como. The group combines students from Dr. Maracy Pryor's SLD class and Peer Leadership Corps. A variety of lessons are prepared to maximize carryover of speech, language, social/pragmatic, and emotional skills.

After four challenging days of NJ ASK testing, this lesson was designed to have the students think past their own hard work, and consider the necessary preparation and diligent efforts of the NJ ASK testing team, Mrs. Eva Prunk, Ms. Marybeth Como, and Ms. Allison McHenry.

Recognition of empathy, dedication, and self-regulation were targeted throughout the lesson.  The students worked in pairs to create a unique letter filled with figurative expressions using candy names to show their appreciation for the testing team's

tremendous hard work.

SNaV CRS:  Lions, Tigers, Bears Oh My!

After weeks of preparation and studying, the first graders at CRS put their skills to the test as they traveled together to the Bronx Zoo to explore animal habitats. Students relished thisopportunity to see firsthand how animals live in nature. Students delved into researching everything they have learned about animals and our teachers were very proud as students demonstrated cooperation, diligence and enthusiasm. Overall, our students had a wonderful and memorable day!

SNaV HMR:   Principal For the Day

This year families were given the opportunity to bid on Principal for the Day at both the Franklin Lakes Education Association Dinner Dance and HMR's Pub Night.  The Acting Principals spent the day learning about the job and shadowing Mrs. Bajzath.  They attended a show, ate lunch in the principal's office, supervised the 5th grade picnic, explored some authorized personnel areas, observed classrooms, fed the office fish, made announcements, and had many more exciting moments!  The day was amazing and they learned a lot about being principal.  The quote of the day was, "Wow, things came up that we didn't even plan to do today!"  These students had a special sneak peek into a principal's job and were certainly tired at the end of the day.  Thank you to FLEF and the HMR PTA for providing these opportunities!

SNaV HMR 5th Grade Talent Show

Our 5th graders demonstrated their considerable talents at our

recent Talent show.  Every 5th grader

participated, with roles including host, stage crew, music coordinator, performing acts, and chorus.  The school body, family, and friends greatly enjoyed the show.

SNaV WAS:   All About My Mom

The Woodside Kindergarten students learned how to write All About non-fiction stories.  As part of this non-fiction genre study, our young authors wrote a book all about their moms for Mother's Day.  Our students started by completing an interview page for homework.  Our writers then chose facts from the interview page that they wanted to put into their books.  They

worked hard crafting their writing pieces to ensure that they contained a lot of detail, both in illustrations and writing. Next, the students invited their moms into the classroom for muffins and a big surprise;  our writers read their stories to their moms.  There was not a dry eye in the house...  Our exceptional young writers did an excellent job and we hope that they will write more All About books in the future!

SNaV WAS:

Our third graders showed their creativity and inventiveness during the annual Invention Convention. The students learned about famous inventions and inventors, identified a problem,
and came up with an invention to solve it!  Many inventions involved pets, including a bunny cage set up so that a bunny could be fed while the pet owner was involved in other activities. Another terrific invention was steps that turn into a ramp for older or injured dogs.  Other great ideas included a ball organizing contraption to easily find a particular ball and an invention to place the right amount of toothpaste on a toothbrush.

We are so proud of how hard all of the third graders worked and would not be surprised to see some of the inventions at a store sometime soon!
