Recent data reveal an underlying resilience in the U.S. economy, with output and employment gaining strength despite sluggish performance and heightened market volatility across much of the globe. Inflation remains subdued, however, in part due to weak prices for oil and other commodities. Recent measures of output and employment encourage an interest rate "lift-off" by the Federal Reserve at its mid-month meeting, while measures of inflation and global uncertainty could undermine Fed resolve that the time has arrived for such a policy shift.
