For the ten major row crops, the USDA's world crop area database shows that there have been two major "episodes" of sharp increases in these crops--first after the OPEC oil embargo of 1974 (with high commodity prices), and second after about 2000 when China's economic growth and soybean imports began to be felt (and extending through the "global commodity price super-cycle" of 2007-2013.
