Recent studies now show more than one in five teenagers will send a nude photo of themselves (sexting). The danger of this activity cannot be understated.
Consider Holly who sent her boyfriend naked photos and a personal sexual video. Eventually, she had a "normal breakup" with him. Several months later, Holly's naked photos were all over the internet with her full name, email address, job title, where she worked, and other details.
Then it got worse. She received an email threatening to distribute her photos. Holly did not respond. The photos were emailed to her boss and co-workers and went viral within three days. Holly quit her job.
Three years after the break up, she legally changed her name to Holly from her birth name. Six months later she was going to present her doctoral thesis at a conference. Her naked photos appeared on the web with her new name and with the date, time and location of the conference. Fearing for her safety, Holly backed out of the conference and went to the police. "It is really cyber rape. It's just another way of exploiting women."
Lawyer Mary Adkins talks about a client's daughter who had been contacted by a reporter for an interview. He informed her that four nude selfies of her had been on a website for nearly eight months and accumulated over 30,000 views. They had been posted with her full name, the name of the town where she lived, and with links to her Facebook and Twitter accounts.
Mary said, "That's typical revenge porn; it's bullying. 'Porn' is a misnomer since it draws the focal point to the wrong spot, at least from the victim's point of view. Victims have lost jobs, dropped out of school, moved, changed their names, attempted suicide, and more, after having their photos posted without consent." (Adkins, M. (2014, July 21).
